Default Are SMS Messages stored on BES?

Please Login to Remove!

I just upgraded from a 7520 to an 8800 today, and so far i am pretty satisfied. I work for a Government entity, and I havent yet been connected to our BES, but I will be tomorrow.

Every email I send is public domain because every email that goes through my inbox is stored on the server. On the 7520, when i would receive a message, it would show up in the inbox, including in my outlook inbox on my computer. HOWEVER, our IT person said that if something does not show up in my inbox, then its not stored on the server.

Therefore, my question is if I separate my SMS messages to where they DO NOT show up in my inbox, should i feel comfortable that they are NOT being stored on the server?...meaning they would NOT be public doman?

(This is because I sometimes get personal text messages and I wouldnt necessarily want these to be made public. Either way, I'd just rather know whether or not they are being stored.)

Any help would be good. Thanks!

SMS are stored on the device, but from what I understand a BES admin can access them off the device. I'm not sure of this, so someone should back me up. The actual transfer of the SMS messages does not go through the server though.

SMS messages are not handled by the BES. However, if you are sending information that is potentially sensitive in nature via SMS, I would caution you that SMS messages are stored for a period of time (not sure but I think it is 90-120 days) on the carrier's servers. This data can be subpoenaed, although it is not "public".
Hope this info helps.

SMS, PIN Messages and phone call logs all have the ability to be logged in BES 4.1

This is one of the primary reason we upgrades to BES 4.1.

If you log sms messages on the BES then you can read the content in the sms log file.

Best practice is to keep anything off a company BES-connected BB that you want to keep private. If in doubt, why risk it unless it doesn't matter if it's private or not?

Agree 100%, we just had a heated discussion about this in the general area.... Assume they can see, read, and access all.... Better to be safe than sorry especially if it could effect your job....

Yes, the content and all details of the SMS message (incoming and outgoing) are recorded and logged on BES 4.1.

This is also true for PIN messages with BES 4.1.

How about Web Client e-mail? Is there a way that a BES Admin can access them?

Yes.

As was said, assume nothing is sacred.

Web Client e-mail that you send from your Blackberry can be forced to go through BES.
Incoming Web Client e-mail to your device cannot be read easily.
However, since a large portion of your inbound mail will most likely be replied to... the replies can be forced through BES. The reply often contains the original message you are replying to... so that means it goes through BES as well.

The best way to keep your mail private is to not have your personal device on a corporate BES.
