Default Wireless Calendar Synchronization

Currently new to BES Admin, have 5 in house users and 40 remote users. Our BES is running version 3.6. which was setup in November. I find that the devices that are setup for in house users work fine with wireless calendar synch. But does not work for remote personnel. How do I enable this feature for remote personnel (these are people who's only connection to the Exchange server is through OWA; IMAP or Citrix). When they receive meeting invites through their device, they have not options to accept or decline.

I've never been able to accept or decline meetings anyway.

Great answer...

tiztiz - you should have the remote users check their Intellisync Setup; I would bet that their Calendar option is set to Outlook instead of BlackBerry Wireless Sync. To change it, their PCs/laptops must have a connection to the Exchange server. This could be a problem, since you wrote that they only connect via OWA, IMAP or Citrix. Do you have a VPN client? Do the remote users have local Outlook profiles?

Default No VPN

Treo600:

Correct thier calendar option is set to Outlook. Thanks for answer, I had a feeling that I would probably need to initiate a VPN. Am researching types now, what can you recommend?

Would I still need to have VPN when we upgrade to to 4.0?

You will need to upgrade both the handhelds and the BES to 4.0. Upgrading the handheld can not be done over the air - you have to install the code on the PC and update the BB via Desktop Manager. Once that is done, assuming you are using Exchange as your infrastructure, everything is wireless - calendar, notes, tasks and contacts.

As far as VPNs go, there are several, including Raptor Mobile and Aventail. I personally like Aventail. All are hardware/software combinations.

The best reason for having a VPN is for providing network access remotely and securely (I am using Outlook via VPN to our office network); not only can I use Outlook, but I can sync my BB from home.

Also I've notice with BES 4.0. When you upgrade, you will have to reactivate the remote users' devices. This isn't as bad as it sounds, as 4.0 can be activated and completely setup wirelessly.

What you will have to do on an upgrade is upgrade BES (the database will convert and keep all the users data). Upgrade devices. Have the users upgrade their device and restore the data (fairly simple procedure all done with the apploader). Then you can tell BES to send a password to the devices to remotely activate them. The users will get this password via email (not on the blackberry though), along with instructions on how to wirelessly activate it. Most of our users are VERY tech-illiterate and haven't had any real problems in doing this though. Just be prepared for it however.

Provided you have Windows Server 2003, Exchange 2003 on yer servers, and Windows XP with Office 2003, Outlook 2003 to be more exact, on your remote clients, I would use RPC over HTTP(s)...
