Default Out of Memory Questions and Answers

So, I have seen a lot of threads about the memory problems (running out of memory, dumps, etc.). Well today I was looking at my 8100 and I noticed that I only had 95K of memory left. Now, I dont have a lot of appliations, extras or themes installed. So, I was currious to know why I didnt have much memory left.

So, I started to check my settings for video, pictures and ringtones and much to my surprise they were all set to go save to the SD card. So, where did all of the memory go.

First I went to my camer and noticed that I had a picture on the screen (another late night at a bar ... he he she was cute....) but I deleted the picture. Now, I noticed that I did not save this picture yet. It was one that I snapped and then moved on with life. After saying delete, guess what I got back about 1MB of memory. So, my asumption is that the picture was sitting in device memory waiting for me to save it or some thing. Since I chose not to save it .... memory restored to the device. This got me currious about some things....

So, I went into my settings (explore media) slected options from the menu. there are two options there that made a big difference in what I seen in my memory status. In the Media Options section the first was "Device Memory Limit" (changing this I did not see any difference in my memory status, but I am currious just the same). I changed this setting from 25M (highest setting) to 12M (lowest setting). I didnt notice any changes with the device at all. So, what does this option do.

The next setting I changed made a huge difference in available system memory. This option is called "Reserved Pictures Memory" I changed this option from 12M (highest setting) to 2M (lowest setting), when I did this my memory on the device went from 1M to 12M available. Interesting Huh?

So, does any one know what these settings do and if I have adversly affected the device for pictures or video capture????

Thanks in advance.

"Reserve pictures memory" reserves a certain amount of device memory for pictures. The amount reserved is made unavailable for the device for other things.

I think (but I'm not sure) that the Device memory limit sets a limit on the device memory that can be allocated to media. Changing this setting does not appear to affect "available" device memory.

I changed the device memory limit to the lowest possible (12mb) and the pictures reserve to the lowest possible, which in the OS .69 is 0. I've noticed no adverse consequences.
