Default T-Mobile HotSpot@Home calling with 8120?

Please Login to Remove!

My wife is still with T-Mobile.. and she wants to get a Pearl. If I buy 8120 from T-Mo, and get something like $39.99 plan, and add $10 for e-mail data only, can I still use hotspot@home and get unlimited wifi calling for free? Is that service still available, like that commercial they had, people coming over and making free calls with T-Mo phones?

Or is there additional fee for that service?
Thanks.

I believe the T-Mobile @Home service is T-Mobile only. T-Mobile UMA service is exclusive and is not available through AT&T.

You will still need to purchase the $9.95 @Home service to use the Unlimited UMA service. Otherwise you will connect to UMA but call usage will still use your minutes.

So get the $29.99 plan, + $9 @Home, + $10 Email/Web and you'll be all set.

I see. I just found the commercial "Jimmy's Hot Spot" and yes it does say that for $9.99 you get unlimited calling from home.

Just one question though, I guess we still would have to get T-Mobile router, right? Or can we use our own router?

If I get $29.99 it will lower her minutes to 300 and will lose unlimited night calling or unlimited m2m, which she has now. Anyway, I guess I will still buy 8120 for her, I beleive extra $50 is well worth for WiFi, but it's the color she wants.

Make sure you're clear about WHICH of the $10 @Home plans you're considering. The first, Hotspot@Home, is T-Mobile's UMA/WiFi service that lets you use your T-Mobile wifi-enabled cellphone/blackberry to make unlimited calls (no charge to your mobile minutes) via a paired WiFi connection. The other plan, which was first rolled out over the last 3 weeks, is "T-Mobile@Home", which is their entry into the VoIP makret. This is available only to T-Mobile customers with an existing plan, and is, in effect, a $10 monthly add-on that provides you with unlimited domestic US calling over a home VoIP phone.

They're both great plans -- I've just signed up for the VoIP T-Mobile@Home service and have to say that it's fantastic -- love the quality, ease of setup and the same excellent 24x7 T-Mobile customer service that I've enjoyed with their mobile service for the past 10 years.

I just bought the 8120 last week through TMobile. No matter the carrier, I get terrible service in my house. This phone has changed that. My service with the wifi is as good as it can get. I have my own router and haven't had any problems. You don't have to pay extra as any minutes you use are deducted from your monthly minutes pool. If you add the HotSpot @ home service for $9.99 then you get unlimited calls from any wifi connection. Hope that answers your questions.

I know the difference, but thanks for reminding. rsant39, that's actually very good, I thought about that. Does 8120 support WEP or WPA security, IP input (when you don't run DHCP) and custom DNS settings?

I don't know about IP setting vs DHCP & custom DNS, but I can see that the 8120 handles WEP, WPA and WPA2, these WLAN security methods:
* WEP (64-bit or 128-bit)
* Pre-shared Key (PSK)
* 8021.X/EAPxxx8211;LEAP
* 8021.X/EAPxxx8211;EAPxxx8211;PEAP
* 8021.X/EAPxxx8211;TLS
* 8021.X/EAPxxx8211;TTLS
* 8021.X/EAPxxx8211;FAST
* 8021.X/EAPxxx8211;SIM

along with a lot more. Pretty impressive...

I've been using an Apple Airport Extreme with my home's setup and it works perfectly. My office uses the T-mobile/Linksys unit and works fine here too. I have really bad reception at home and work (about 80% of my use) so this thing is great!

That's cool. I guess the data is obviously going over WiFi while you are in UMA.
Is it possible for it to catch any wifi and connect without you being aware of it?

It's possible, as long as it has a profile. My 8120 automatically connects at any Starbucks. But other "open" WiFi networks, you'd have to initiate the connection, just like a laptop or PDA.

From a business perspective, what do you think about using T-Mobile@Home service to replace a landline? I think this could be very cost effective for home office employees.

Yes the 8120 supports WEP and WPA and custom/manual IP configuration. As a note I had to use manual IP config to get UMA to work with my router at home. It wasn"t sending the DNS info properly but with manual config everything works great . I am also using WEP

Yeah, DNS is the PITA when it comes to inputting one yourself. It's OK. Good to hear that it is customizable.

I just bought 8120 for my wife. The guy at T-Mo said if I signed up for UMA, I could go to another country, and still be able to make unlimited calls as long as I am using WiFi. With Pearl it is very easy, since there is a setting, to disable GSM and strictly limit it to WiFi. This is pretty good, I must say.

I replaced my home landline with this service. The number port went through easily and the call quality is excellent. I'm just using my regular old phones I had previously (landline phones) but bought the T-Mobile router just so I wouldn't have any issues with my 8120, which I use for UMA calling because I get perfect reception. I would highly recommend this service, I'm saving from $45-90 per month, I imagine a home business would see a greater savings than this. Plus it's just another T-Mobile number, so my cell to home calls are always free now, which is nice.

You have to remember, though, that T-Mobile does NOT offer this to people on a business plan. I've been a long-time T-Mobile customer. The account was initially in my name, then for several years in my business name, and I had to switch it back to my name in order to take advantage of the T-Mobile@Home option.

Also: I like the service - sound quality is excellent, etc - but it's not perfect just yet. I may be among the minority, but in the 4.5 days I've had it up and running, I've lost service twice. My router (the WRTU54G that T-Mobile provides) was up and running and I had Internet access, but the blue light -- and phone service -- were out. I rebooted the router, and about a minute later the blue light came on and service to the phones resumed.

I called Customer Care and the person I spoke with confirmed that she had a couple of similar calls earlier in the day, and the rebooting the router restored service each time. There is even an entry in T-Mobile's FAQ section on the website the describes this "fix". Tech Support at T-Mobile had at least a 20 minute wait last night - quite possibly helping people with this newly rolled out service - so I wasn't able to speak with anyone there yet.

I really want the service to work, but I am hesitating porting my home number over until I see a fix for this. One thing I did, though, was get an agreement from the Customer Care rep to extend my "buyer's remorse" period from 14 to 30 days. Hopefully this will gives us time to work out the glitch while I still have an option to cancel the contract if necessary.

Fingers crossed though - I DO want this to work! I mention this only because I would want this to be more solid before depending on it for a business, no less my primary home phone! Hoping to have better news to report back here soon.

I've had the HotSpot@Home service with the 8120 for 4 days now and it is awesome. Calls are very clear, and there is little to no delay (called my cell phone from the home phone).

I do have a question about internet access... I only signed up for the BB Unlimited Email service with the expectation that I would be able to go online when at home or at any other "wi-fi" connection. But when I try to go online on the BB, I get the TMobile "buy the unlimited web access" page.

Am I doing something wrong? Do I have to sign up for a data/internet plan other than the unlimited email plan?

Thanks in advance for any help

Hotnicks, I was actually thinking about the same thing. I do not have the phone with me now, but is there any settings on the browser, for you to indicate which connection browser should be using? Go to Settings and then to Browser, and see if there is any connection selection, so you can swap to WiFi.

I have a question as well, I am trying to access BIS website to set up e-mail, but T-Mo is giving me timeout error.. I can't even get to password screen. What is the URL you guys are using to access the BIS e-mail.

EDIT:
I just found out they are doing some maintanence:

With BB email you only get email and not unlimited internet. Unlimited internet is an additional $10/month. I just have the unlimited email but I am thinking about upgrading to the internet. Also, to setup my email I was having trouble doing from the Blackberry but I logged on to My T-mobile and you can set it up from there.
