So this is an old unsubstantiated rumor which belongs in the Rumor Mill section and is not based on any new information.

Tmo is throwing off cash; the parent has committed to bidding aggressively in the upcoming AWS and launching HSDPA in 2007. I don't think it's up for sale, and I don't think Cingular wants to buy a carrier with such a pressed spectrum position.

I agree! Blackstone just invested $3.3B in DT and my guess is all of that is going to fund the AWS auction. I really doubt TMO is up for sale. In fact, it's in better financial shape than Cingular giving DT's cash position.

As an employee at the TMO Corporate office, I have to say that we hear rumors of our impending sale at least once a month- although the whole "merger and acqusition" dynamic is part of what makes this industry fun, I'll believe it when I see them taking down the signs on the front of the buildings.

So true about the industry. Its hard to believe that Verizon was once a baby bell.

Now there's a MOD! How about if I start and confirm the rumor, will that count?

Verizon wasn't a Baby Bell. Verizon was a combination of NYNEX and Bell Atlantic. It was not one of the original Baby Bells.

It all depends on the ludicious/repeated rumor quotient.
I'll have to consult my Magic 8 Ball.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8700/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102 UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0)

The Magic 8-ball *is* the all-knowing oracle.

Merging Tmo and Cingular isn't easily possible. However it would be interesting to see them try. ...and to see the resulting company.

Wasn't Bell Atlantic a baby bell? And I believe it was the Bell Atlantic GTE merger that put Verizon on the map???

I stand corrected... http://www.bellsystemmemorial.com/bellopercomp.html

In 97 Ninex merged with Bell Atlantic and in 2000 Bell Atlantic and GTE made VZ.

Edit.. The question I have is who will buy Qwest. 15 states, countless miles of copper and one lonely customer out on a South Dakota farm...

Verizon was a merger of the following: NYNEX, Bell Atlantic, GTE, and Airtouch (who had acquired US West Cellular less than a year previously). I worked for them for 10 years. Changed companies three times without leaving my desk. 8)

And I believe NYNEX was a merger of New York Telephone and New England Telephone. Then NYNEX merged with, was it Bell Atlantic? It then became Bell Atlantic which gave them most of the east coast.

Anyway, I still think of Verizon as being born from the baby bells. I watched them repaint their trucks through all the various mergers.

Oh yeah, I forgot, Primeco was part of the Verizon merge as well.
