I've had mine since it was released and just this week I noticed about 4 specks of dust. I'll probably pull it apart and clean it.

the dust problem on mine is getting worse. It is all piling up in one spot. I contacted my rep today to see if he can get me another one. Cingular support won't replace them under warranty due to dust?

If you call Cingular warranty suport and fight they'll replace it with a refurb.

A refurb that will get dusty? I'll pass.

I have a 8700g and never have dust issues. I wonder if this is only a cingular 8700c problem?

Jeeze! I can't believe RIM would go through the trouble of creating such a beautiful screen and then be so careless not to seal it properly.
This is very dissapointing to a potential customer such as myself!

All I know is that after I read all these multiple threads for the past 2 hour+, from people that I really respect, this issue is out of hand. HAS RIM ACKNOWLEDGED THIS PROBLEM? Sorry to yell, but why haven't they? I have a 7100g and it's a progressive and increasingly "dirty" problem. Been one year old this month and it's getting to the point of maddening. Maybe they bought in on the concept of "planned obsolesence" like US Auto manufacturers of the 70's and 80's?

I've had mine for a little over a week and I have dust. I've had it since my third or fourth day of having it. I first thought it was a dead pixel since it resembles one but it's not white, it's black or brown. I can only see it when the screen is on. Really annoying. Thinking I should call Cingular for a replacement. I'll let everyone know how that goes.

it appears that this is a persistent problem with the 8700c - however, has anyone had any experience with the "dust attack" problem on the 8700r? i've had my 8700r for a good two months and it's absolutely spotless underneath the lcd lens.

Default Connection between DUST and using a CASE??

Not sure if there is a connection but ......

I am not the "case" type of person for BBs/phones, but I did order an 8700c case from ThePocketSoution.com and received it the other day.

I have the 8700c for about 2 months now and have not had any real issues with dust (maybe a spec or two). After trying the case (which is nice) for a day, I noticed what looks like to be the "milky way galaxy" (maybe not as bad) in the lower left middle of the display. Also note, I have TheInvisbleShield installed on the screen too. It is only noticeable when the display is off and in bright light.

So, is there a correlation between dust and using a case?? Maybe - - maybe not. I am returning the case to PS today. I will report back if the dust issue gets worse.

I'm confused ... Every phone and PDA I've ever owned has ended up with a ton of dust in it... I run up about 3,000 minutes a month and usually by the 3rd month everything I use ends up with dust inside.

Who cares about dust? I can still see past it just like I can see past the dust on my sunglasses when I'm driving.

I agree but my first unit was worse than any other device I've ever owned. There was so much dust it was begining to obscure the screen.

When I stopped by the Cingular store at which I purchased my 8700c, they agreed without too much fuss to replace the entire BB unit because of the dust problem. (I have had my BB 8700c for about 10 weeks.)

I was given a number to call at Cingular and when I spoke with someone, there was no hassle at all. The new BB 8700c has been sent by UPS 2nd Day. It is sent without a battery or SIM card (I was instructed to use the ones in my current BB in the replacement.) I was also told because the 8700c was relatively new on the market, the unit I would be sent would almost certainly be brand new (although I have to say a so-called "refurbished" one is no great concern to me as it would be in pristine condition with a full warranty).

I am told that the IntelliSync function of the BB Desktop Manager will get all the info from one to the other (although this will be the first time I do this, I am hoping not to screw it up).

One interesting note: When at the Cingular store, I asked what would cause the dust under the screen. The technician took out a tool that had a very long thin needle-like end, inserted into the opening where the trackwheel is and took out... a very small dustball!

If it were only a phone with dust then who gives a rat's butt. It's not. It's an extension of me, primarily might right arm. Also, if it were marketed to a lower standard, I could see the point. I expect the screen to be as bulletproof as the rest of the unit. period. I don't want a refurb because I don't trust them, mainly because of Palm. I would like them to fix it.

My device has gotten dusty to the point that when viewing the screen in direct sunlight, the amount of dust makes it extremely hard to view. I was going to call in to Cingular today to get a warranty replacement setup, but was wondering if they are going to hassle me or if they will replace it without the fuss. According to the post 2 above me, they will, but can I get some further confirmation? Any experience with dust replacements through Cingular would be helpful.

Thanks!

There's no easy answer to that one.

It appears to be a case of pot luck dependent upon which rep. you get when you call. I had to argue a bit with the rep. I got (asked for a supervisor etc.) before they submitted and offered to send me a replacement unit. Turned out to be a refurb.

I got mine replaced back in Feb or March. They should have documentation that this is per the Manufacturer's defect. I had no trouble, and I got a brand new one, but that was probably before they really had any refurb units.
