Default 8110 Google Maps not using gps?

Please Login to Remove!

Hello. I'm a new bb user of less than a month, and I've learned a lot of info from this site. Something I can't quite figure out is after I downloaded and installed Google Maps, it runs fine except that my location is usually off by 1/2 mile or better, so I'm guessing it's not using the gps, only radio towers. I've gone to the Google Maps options and switched Connections, Interactions, and User Data all to Allow. In the GPS tab, the GPS Data Source is set to Device GPS, Location On, and Location Aiding is Enabled. On that page, the Lat and Long locations are all at 0's. I've walked around the neighborhood to be sure it could see the satellites, still to no avail.

I'm using bb 8110 4.3 on AT&T unlimited data plan, but I have not activated the pay version of the AT&T Navigator. The Google Maps version is 2.2.1.

Thanks for any help. (And for this site!)

Welcome to the BBForums.

Your Google Maps is using cell tower triangulation to locate you, not GPS.

At Options > Advanced > GPS > menu > Refresh GPS, be outisde in a clear view of the sky, and give it 10 minutes to refresh and see thet satellites.

It will triangulate if there's no GPS receiver or if the GPS receiver can't get a satellite fix (i.e. you're indoors). The initial satellite lock can take quite some time.

Wirelessly posted

I have the same phone and service, sometimes it takes a while to lock on to the satellites, but it works well for the most part. You might want to check out windows live search too, it seems to work better and faster for me, but I do like the google directions better, it let's you preview the next turn on the map. If you do try live search and you want to map a contact make sure the address country is listed as "USA" not" united states of America", or live search won't find it.

Thanks for the help. Refreshing the gps outdoors did the trick. I'll also look at Windows live search as an alternative.
