How can I disable voice mail so I can't receive messsages while overseas to avoid high roaming charges for messages?

Welcome to the forums!

Your carrier should be able to tell you how to remove the forwarding to your voice mail (and how to reinstate it when you return to the US!)

Wirelessly posted (Verizon 8830)

There may be an automated option as was alluded to above. No way to do it through the device as far as I know.

Sorry.
I am not able to edit from WAP.

Another option is to get a visual voicemail program like youmail where you get the messages emailed to you.
This will be data assuming you can take email

With AT&T you have to call them and ask them to disable it. Last time I called, they said that is the only way to disable it.

Voicemail is a carrier feature -- not a BB feature. Call your carrier.
