Default Backup Fails

Please Login to Remove!

Not sure what's wrong, but I cannot seem to do a backup. Here are the steps I'm doing..

1. Open Device Manager.
2. Connect BB.
3. Choose "Backup and Restore".
4. Choose "Backup".
5. Select file for Full Backup (shown as "Backup-[2008-12-14].ipd").
6. I choose the directory where I want the Backupfile stored on my C:\.
7. Save.
8. The Backup starts.

During the process, however, an error message is displayed >> "The data was not recognized by the the device."

The backup ends shortly thereafter. No backup file is saved in the folder on my HD.

Thanks.

Is your device PIN being recognised?

Try switching round steps 1 and 2. Usually the BB needs to be plugged in first before opening DM.

Most likely one of your data bases is corrupted. When it happened to me it was my profile data base caused by WSJ News Reader. I restored my profiles from a previous backup and removed WSJ (until they came out with a fix for the program) and everything was fine. So watch while it is backing up and see if you can tell which file it is on when it errors out and replace that with a previous backup using the advance feature on DM backup tab.

I removed WSJ News Reader. Still dies. Same place.. "Receiving profiles"

Unfortunately, I don't have any previous backup from which to restore.. this was to be my first.. in preparation for install of 4.5.

Any way to restore default profiles?

Yes. The device PIN is recognized. I reversed 1 and 2... Died again. Same place.. "Receiving profiles"

I don't think I changed any of the default Profiles. I know I didn't add or delete any (although, the purpose of a backup is to make sure one doesn't lose one's specific changes).

I'd search the DM Help, but nothing appears when I select Help from the Main Menu.

Wirelessly posted (8310; RammerJammer!)

Have you tried clearing the browser cache?

The profile file is already corrupted and removing WSJ won't change that. What I would do is in the DM backup tab under advance, on the device data bases, just delete profiles and see if it will complete the backup. If it does then go ahead and update you operating system.
If it still won't backup, you can backup each data base separately under the advance tab on DM and then install 4.5.

After updating, your profiles will be at the default settings and you can make any changes you want.
As for WSJ reader, here is a link to a 'fix' version http://wsju.mwap.at which I have been using with no problems. Just do a backup once you get your profiles set before reloading the WSJ reader.

Hope this helps. Also, for future reference, I always do a current backup before loading any third party apps. It's a good habit in case something like this happens.

Yes. Seems as though there may be a problem with Profiles since that is where the Backup fails.

Any way to reset Profiles to factory configuration?

May have to have to do a full wipe or have AT&T do a hard reset? If I have to reload applications, etc... so be it... I strongly believe I need to have a reliable Backup routine.

The only way I found to fix issues like this is to go to the section under "Backup" in the DM...I think it's the "Advanced" section...where you can see all your databases, then remove the affected database on the device side, and trying again.

I was able to backup by selecting all databases EXCEPT Profiles.

Question is.. How do I correct the Profile database corruption? Just install 4.5? Or, wipe the 8310, install 4.5 and then re-install all applications?
