Default My 8100 LED Mod

Please Login to Remove!

I know y'all have seen all the Sharpie mods but I did something a little different.
I used gels. Now for those of you who are not into lighting, those are the things that give you the different colors on the stage of you favorite rock concert. I went to my local music store and bought a pack for 5 bucks. Which is cheaper than a pack of Sharpies. I cut out 4 strips, one of each color and voila instant colored LED's.
Now the reason I say to use gels is, what if you feel like changing colors. Well you have to get out the denatured alcohol and hope nothing gets messed up in the process. With these just remove the tiny pieces of tape and add new color. Here is the finished product. I'll take some pics of the inside later. I did the mod first to make sure it would look ok.
I used one of each color. Green, Blue, Red, Yellow. I also put tiny pieces on the trackball led's to try to make the color more vivid. I don't think it worked as well as I would have liked on the trackball but 'c'est la vie'. I also use colorball on custom with all colors lit up.

Enjoy

Added 2 pics of the inside so you can see the gel

It's the piece in front of the can that gives the light it's color.
Like a thick piece of cellophane

In addition to what the OP mentioned, you can get a gel swatch book (most theatre lighting people own a few of these) for cheap:

http://www.stagespot.com/cgi-bin/sho...&key=GELSWATCH

You could go totally nuts tricking out your phone with the available colours in a swatch book, each swatch is probably... maybe 1" wide by 2" or 3" long.

For the curious: besides a lighting rigger using the gels in a way you'd think, costume designers use them to test gel against fabric (some gel colours can "change" a fabric colour, like how black fabric is actually deep red or deep green) and some set designers use them to proof against their paints (some paints contain chemicals which ... reflect? light differently than others).

Dude I think I'm getting the swatch.
You now have me wondering what a different color on each led would look like.
That is so sweet.

So when you put these over the LED's how did you get the to stay on?

Might be a dumb question but kinda curious because when I rip mine apart I'm going to do this mod.

I cut little pieces scotch tape the same width of the gel. If you look at the first inside pic you can see the tape on top

That's really cool, I bet it would look really cool on my white pearl with the color pearl app. If I ever get the guts to disect my BB I'll be sure to do that!

Well, I am such a skinflint sometimes, I ordered the free swatch book.

And my Pearl is getting old enough that I think I don't mind ripping apart the thing to do the mod.

I was going kayaking and surfing this weekend. Maybe not if I get distracted with this mod.

And who knows, I may break the darn thing. If I do break the Pearl, I'll know not to visit BBF for some sympathy.

Here is a link to all the different types of gel colors they have. Go into the section you are interested in and at the bottom of the page you can request your free swatch book.
