Is there anyway to hardcode through IT-Policy the number of days an e-mail will remain on a HH? I have users that seem to think they need the last 5 years of e-mails on there device. I think 30 days is more then sufficient, but their the customer...

5 YEARS!? Are you freaking kidding me?! WTF is some crotchety old CEO gonna do with a 5 year old e-mail on his handheld? Refer to it for future technologies? Gimme a break.

Max message prepopulation count is 750. You can also set Message Duration in an IT Policy to -1. This will keep messages on the device forever. Besides, the memory on a device is usually limited. Tell Capt. Stubborn he doesn't want his "precious" to explode and send little bits of data everywhere. It's quite messy. Most non-technicial types are too stupid to really understand the true nature of sarcasm anyways.

The "Keep Message Duration" policy only applies to Handhelds running 4.2 and higher.

That would only cover about 35-40% of my enviroment...

I don't understand why it doesn't apply to older handhelds because the Keep Messages option has been around since before 4.x.

... just because the functionality is in the device doesn't mean the functionality is in the server to manage the software on the device. With RIM making both I guess we're lucky that there aren't too many of these issues.

It is very easy to poke fun at other peoples customers, and as much as I do not do like the customer demands I can understand them. The users in question all keep PST files that are around 5-10 GB. They save every single e-mail reveive and send so they can protect themselves on any decisions they make. They are overly concerned about covering their own bottoms. These folks are suppose to be decision makers and leaders but are afraid to make decisions without a paper trail or permission.

Every sinlge one of my customers use 4.1 on their devices.

5 years just isn't practical. I can understand a CYA scenario, but handhelds arent' designed (yet) to handle that capability. If you choose to go with the -1 for Message Duration, I recommend you tell them that they store that many messages at their own risk. If they want to be that protected with a virtual papertrail, there's gotta be some kind of risk involved.

on the handheld, 'forever' means 'as long as I have memory available'. Old messages will auto delete to make room for new ones.

Thanks for all the great replies. I have explained this to my troublesome user and and she has backed down. I have also explained this to my Junior admins that do all the HH setup for the users.
