You can't do it on a Mac. You need to use Windows if you want to use this update.

Anyone else have battery issues with the new upgrade? I went from poor battery performance (could get about 10 hours with slight to moderate usage) to 6 hours life with basically no usage, just being on. Yes, location is turned on on the phone, but beyond that just have the 3G signal, in an area with 4 bar's phone coverage, no other network connections are in place, and I just use the screen maybe 10 minutes in that time.

I did the upgrade to get the mobile hotspot (which Verizon is still going to be configuring the account so haven't actually tried it yet) but if I can only get 6 hours, I don't know that I can survive it.

And yes, it's a sprint OS, so I'm not expecting any support from Verizon on any issues I find, so thought I'd see if others had seen worse battery performance. I know infonline said their battery life was better, wondered if others had had the same.

It's not a windows only update. I've done them in the past on other BB's just don't remember how to find the vendor file.

The update file linked to in the first post is a windows executable - wont run on a mac (unless you have windows running in a virtual machine).

Yes, I have battery performance issue too. On a full charge, just checked email for a few mins and it drained 10%!

You totally do not know what you are talking about.

The update is a EXE. You cannot run that on a Mac natively.

You can only update to OS versions officially released by your carrier if you are trying to do it on a Mac.

Anyone else lose functionality in the Podcast app? now when I look at it I can't add/remove podcast subscriptions.

Edit to add: Actually it doesn't seem to have "subscriptions" at all any more. All that it shows are podcasts that were downloaded before on the older OS version.

I have poor battery performance with this upgrade too...

The thinking clock has been reduced tho...usually i need to do a battery pull every day, now it needs to do battery pull in about 5 days before it freezes occasionally...

RIM....why dont you make a good OS? In my country, Indonesia, we are the largest blackberry users in the world...we depend on the stability of your os and device!

I don't have any battery life or other stability issues with this OS at all.

After using this a while, I am noticing some stability issues.

Every now and then I will lose icon notifications of new messages, new Facebook postings, etc. It turned out that the bar on the home screen was missing - the bar that has the sound profile on the left, the icon notification area in the middle, and the search command on the right.

A reboot fixes this (temporarily).

Weird.

I used to sometimes lose the notification bar as well, but I was still able to click on it and have the drop down box appear with all the info. I haven't experienced it yet on my 9900. With the newest leak.

Isn't the 9930 the CDMA version of the 9900?
In any event I am on my 4th version of 7.1 on my 9900 (gem version of the Bold) and hotspot is the big feature. I had 7.1 on my Rogers' 9900 about a month before Roger's officially released 7.1 and it has worked well. Apparently on Rogers, if you have tethering you also get hotspot.
I have never understood the reason to charge extra for tethering or hotspot, except to gouge the consumer. Data is data, and mobile data is already exponentially more expensive than fixed line internet data.

Default Re: Latest OS: 9930 7.1.0.457/7.1.0.163 (All Languages)

Very simple.

It's called "breakage".

There is an inherent cost for the networks for everything they offer to the user. Data for example - if they sell you a 6GB plan, they know by averages, that the average usage may be 1 GB/month/user. I'm using arbitrary numbers here -

When users add a feature like tethering, or WiFi hotspot, the carriers know that it will increase their costs, because the "breakage" is now higher, meaning more data will get used on average. Breakage would be the term they'd use when they are betting on usage, and make no mistake, this is all about odds.

If they believe usage to be X without HotSpot's and it goes to X +90% with a HotSpot, they make less. Think of it as an insurance policy. The underwriters are placing odds on the fact that you won't need to use them. It's all about risk management.

In the very same way - the carriers are betting you'll only use 1GB of data, but you bought and paid for 6GB. They make their money. With a HotSpot, you'll use say 3GB, forcing costs higher for the carrier. They make less money.

They charge, because a) they can b) they do incur a higher cost when adding a feature that will incur more usage.

In the end, to the carrier, 6GB of mobile date isn't the same as 6GB of tethered data, since usage (breakage) will be far higher on the tethered data.
