I ran into this problem a good while ago... I just pulled the usb drivers off and packaged them... Now when we get new BB in field I point them to my website and they grab a 187k file named InstallRimUsbNT.EXE and run it. No DTM to load.

i rarely have the desktop manager running when my 7100t is plugged into the USB port... it charges just fine.

You may not have the software running but you have it installed, they want to charge without having the software installed at all. Like me I dont have the software installed on my laptop but it charges just fine as long as I cancel theinstallation of the drivers everytime. on a win98se machine

Someone ever tried to charge BB using USB wall charger. I did but can't charge BB so that I guess BB need a signal to switch on channel for recharging.

We ran into the same problem -- people want to keep their wall charger in their briefcase. We didn't want to push out the cradles, since we thought we would have to load the software to make them charge, and we don't want the software, since we are syncing everything wirelessly with the BES. We found that we can make the units charge in their cradle without the Desktop Manager software in Win2000 and WinXP this way:

Plug in the cradle to a USB port and cradle the BB. Windows should say new hardware found, RIM handheld (or something close to that), and it needs drivers to use the device properly. Point the install to drive that you have rimusbnt.inf and rimusb.sys, and it should load the hardware. It should now charge without the Desktop Manager. Hope that helps!

I am able to charge my 7290 with any available USB port on any computer with or without the RIM software installed.

BTW: I think this an awesome way to charge portable gadgets. I travel frequently. Been on 70 planes in six months. And I'm always trying to light the load. Packing numerous chargers is a huge pain in the arse! For the 7290, I even have a short 3 inch USB cable I use to charge off my HP tablet pc. Very sweet! Now if my Gmini 400 and cell phone would do the same, I'd be flying free and easy. Now to find some comfy dress shoes that pass through the metal detector!

When I plug my 7520 into the USB port at work, no DTM installed, W2K Professional, the New Hardware Found box appears with RIM Handheld in it. Since I do not have administrator privleges on this machine, I get a message stating that I cannot install devices on this computer. The lightning bolt stays lit the entire time it is connected, BUT the battery does NOT charge. Any ideas ???

my 7100g doesn't charge about half the time i plug it in to my laptop. usually when this happens the bes client doesn't detect the phone. the charging icon will briefly appear on the phone & go away. a reboot of the pc resolves the issue.

sometime it will charge, but the bes client will still not detect the device.

& once i plugged the rim in to the laptop & it rebooted. rim, not laptop.

it's all rather frustrating.

The hub must be AC powered. Plug it in and the BlackBerry will charge. That's because self powered hubs are only authorized to give 100 milliamps, while fully powered USB ports and hubs are authorized to give 500 milliamps of electric current.

The problem with charging is as so.

When the device is not recognised and installed correctly PINS 1&6 or 5&6 are disabled. (Its not important which are disabled if I'm wrong.)

The fact that some PINS are disabled the device will not be provided with as much power as normal. Yet, the charging icon will appear.


Now if you use your Blackberry while it is connected, it will be using power quicker than it is charging. I imagine the person who leaves it overnight may get away with it idling.


The solution (have not tested) of just getting the drivers installed rather than the complete package seems best.
(Point Hardware Install to rimusbnt.inf and rimusb.sys)

What I want is the RIM device to be installed as a Modem, so the device can be used as a Modem. I'll find the required files in the DATA1.cab of Desktop Manager files, although this solution will require some files to be installed.

so that anytime, anywhere, i need to charge BB no need
this goddam software driver !!
