Cool Fnally Good Pictures of my Blackberry Javelin Curve 8900!

Please Login to Remove!

Just got it today for my birthday and I wasn't too impressed with it out of the box. I previously had all BB devices since the days of 6230 and this was the first upgrade where I wasn't 100% happy.

I owned the T-Mobile 8320 from Winter of 2007 to Fall of 2008 when I upgraded to the facelift style of the 8330 also for T-Mobile. My 8330 pretty much gives me everything I need on a day to day basis all in a small size. The new Javelin-Curve feels not much different than the older Curve. Slightly smaller, slightly slimmer, sleeker and more slippery to the touch. Previous evolution of Blackberries focused on major shrinkage. Here not so much. Basically you won't be upgrading because you want a something very much smaller than the 8320 Curve.

Out of the box I realized with much dissappointment that the back battery door is not brushed-metal as it looks in all the pictures, but more 5 cent taiwan made plastic. The door also was not tightly snug in place when locked. The screen is also softer than the previous BBerries. I can squeeze it and warp the lcd below (similar to a LCD monitor). Previous BBerries had the hard screen glass that prevented that.

Another gripe is the keypad and ring around the trackball is very dimly lit, when compared to my older Curves (see pics below). With the 8320 white keypad style having the brightest keypad and the 8330 coming in second best. The Javelin-Curveseems to be on the dim side when it comes to these lights. Hopefully this will translate to better battery life. Other than these minor gripes it seems to be a promising device that looks very sharp and keen.

I'm sure once I get started with it I will see that where the Javelin-Curve out shines its ancestors will be in the software and speed.

Enjoy my pictures...

I'm hard to please? not really. Didn't you see the threads in here about "left side of keyboard squeeks" and "tiny bumps by the LED" ? Those posters have true quality obsession. I'm here to share pictures and thoughts.

After two days with the 8900. I love it as much as my 8320/8330. The software progression and design is definately present in the 8900. Which is expected.

Two major stand outs:

1. Although the Internet is not faster than on the previous Curve, but you get better and full internet pages that load at the same rate (dependant on your carrier/coverage). So you can say you get more page at the same rate, but heavy graphic pages will load slow regardless. This is heavily my opinion because my gfriend used it to shop online last night at a few clothing websites (Ninewest, Banana Republic) and she thought it was much faster than on the previous Curve.

So said and done the speed you get is up to you, the websites you visit and your coverage speed in your area. Still you get more internet at the same speed as before and that is a good thing. There is also now a tiny "mouse arrow" that makes browsing realistic.

So design is much better on the Internet, but not speed.

2. Keypad/Trackball. The keypad design and ease of use is the best on any Blackberry or PDA/Smart Phone I've ever used and I've used damn near all of them. I can't figure out as yet what makes it better, but typing is 1000 times better than the previous Curve. As for the trackball, it feels smaller than on the older Curve, but the black rubber ball is more grippy and doesn't pick up oils and dirt at all. My only complaint is the dimness of the keypad's and trackball frame ring's backlight.

Some potential problems

1. The quality of the housing is not all that great (especially compared to the Leather backed/metallic Bold). The Javelin has that cheap plastic feel about it, especially the screen area. It feels like the screen wil pick up scratches easily. Also the screen has a upper border that seems to be a cut line where it separates from the upper part of the phone. I don't really like that, since the older Curve has a smooth continious screen that went all the way up the the top edge (where the LED indicators were). The Javelin's screen is sectioned off at the top of the screen itself. And the screen's surface is easily squeezable where poking it with your fingers (or say if you have keys or a pen in you bag next to it) will actually create warps in the LCD fluid below. I'm not sure of the potential damage that sort of contact (if it is consistent) will cause down the line. The battery door is a joke. It is probably one of the loosest fitting doors I can rememeber on any Blackberry. It also does not flush smoothly with the back top section where the camera lens lay. There is an annoying dip/groove where the two seperate.

2. I wish I can make the home screen and apps screen icons smaller under the Screen Display Settings (but I guess that will help the Theme economy sell more themes for the 8900).

Overall, I love this phone and despite a few quirks it is one of the best Berries I've owned. I can't wait for the 3G versions and the inevitable style facelift that RIM will give it over the next few months.

Wirelessly posted (8900)

I agree with you on the size. I wish they could have gone thinner though some people like it this size.

The three big advantages over the 8320 are the higher res screen (even though it does suck that it can be distorted by pressure), the faster processor/memory, and the GPS receiver. I am happy with my upgrade just because of those three factors.

Yeah, the plastic always feels cheap-o on the BB devices (more so than on other PDA/Phones) since the days of the 8700.

Uhm...I don't mind the copious use of plastic on the screen or body but I wished the battery door was like the Motorola Razr's battery door from a few years ago where the door was actually a very thin metal. That is what I assumed this 8900 had from the pictures I saw of it online before I got mine. Ou 8900 has a fully plastic door with a metalllic-color paint on there which is fine for some, but when I pay $500+ for this thing I want the real metal.

Said and done, it is very pocket friendly. Mine has been in my suit's breast pocket all day and my jeans pocket after work tonight and it was easy to get to when it rung. I may not even buy a holster or case for this thing it is so pocket friendly (about the size of a small wallet).

I bought a rubber black skin, which is great if you find the 8900 slippery, like I did. With this soft rubber skin it's perfect. ;)

Just to give the obverse view of the 8900, This is my first BB and I chose it over the Bold because it ws a pocket friendly size (if only it had 3g!). Also it was only after about a weeks use that I realise that the battery cover was not as snug a fit as I'd expected/realised but I don't really think it's an issue, IMO.

Overall I like the 8900, lack of 3g aside, I've had smartphones before but not one with a QWERTY keyboard so texting is taking a bit of getting used to and I'm not relying on T9 but actually having to remember how to spell!

I hope you know it isn't a real 8330. It's simply an 8330 housing on an 8320.

The 8330 is a CDMA device, and thus cannot be used on T-Mobile.
