Hi

I have reasonable, but limited, BB exposure over a number of years, but always in a simple email scenario (typically one handset, accessing a single POP3 account).

However, for reasons that I will skip over at this point in time for simplicity, we now need to set up a 9300 (on BT, here in the UK) to be able receive from one (POP3) server, but send out via another (SMTP).

Unfortunately, however, the BT web interface (BIS ?) only allows one address for "server".

Is what we are after possible, whether through a different provider, BESE (we have an SBS 2003 server), etc ?

As always, any help or guidance appreciated.

The only way you can do this is to set up a different ( additional ) email address via your BIS service such as Gmail. When both are on the BB you will be able to select the email address you send from for each email. This is not a simple way but one that will allow receive on one email address and sending on another. Replying may not have this ability.

Apologies, for the sake of keeping the original post more readable, I omitted the fact that I was already aware that a second account could be created.

The requirement is that for this second account, the POP3 and SMTP servers are different.

In fact, in this case, there is no need for an incoming POP3 server on the second account, merely the need to be able to choose which email address to send from - but BIS on BT seems to 'insist' on checking that it can log on to a POP3 server as part of the setup...

So, to rephrase the question, do ANY of BIS, BESE 2010 (or worst case, due to cost) BES allow for different POP3 and SMTP servvers for the SAME email address ?

BIS doesn't use your SMTP server for sending outbound messages.
Outbound messages from the device are sent via RIM's network/servers.
You can't pick your own SMTP server.

For your second address, simply set it up on BIS as you would your first address.
If you don't want to receive mail, but only send on that second address, then do just that.
You can set that address to not forward any messages to your handheld. You will still be able to send messages from the handheld, and pick that address as the FROM address.

You have cleared up a misapprehension for me - I had always assumed that BIS/BES/BESE were, effectively, 'smart relays' between the BB handheld and the "real" POP/SMTP servers.

Just for my own understanding, you state that BIS uses the RIM servers for outgoing, what about BES/BESE ?

Picking up on a couple of other points that you made:-

(2) "You can set that address to not forward any messages to your handheld."

For point (1), we presume that this would be the POP3 server, therefore, as BIS only allows one server to be specified ?

For point (2) Ok - how do we achieve that ?

BES/BESx uses your enterprise messaging system to send outbound mail. (Exchange/Domino/Groupwise).

BIS allows up to 10 POP accounts to be linked to your handheld.

Set a filter in your BIS settings which basically says "Do Not Forward" for any incoming message.

Thanks to you both for your replies.

BIS for BT has an option "When no filters apply, Do not forward messages to device", so that appears to cover that for the second account.

Penguin3107, we understand that "BIS allows up to 10 POP accounts to be linked to your handheld."

As such, the question, for the second mail account, was whether the 'Server' field to be used when setting this email account up on the BB is the POP3 or SMTP server ?

Confused, as the POP3 server will never forward emails (using the 'do not forward' filter), whilst the SMTP server will never be used either (as messages go out via the RIM servers) !

Consequently, not sure why BIS needs to validate against either.

Finally, would like to expand my understanding re BES/BESx. We have SBS 2003 running Exchange. If we installed BES or BESE, could we then have the two different domains being sent out from different servers i.e. domain A being sent from the SBS server, domain B via an external SMTP server ?
