Default Google sync: "Login Failed due to network problems please check your settings"

Please Login to Remove!

I was trying to use Google sync to sync my contacts with my Blackberry. I followed the instructions I found on a couple youtube videos.
You can search:
Synchronize Blackberry Calendar and Contacts with Google

(I can't post a web link.)

Like many I got the
"Login Failed due to network problems please check your settings"

Searching this forum only led me to two threads that were closed (?) without any resolution of the problem. I also found many confusing suggestions at other forums on the web (I'm embarrassed to say I tried most of them).

In a google forum I found the suggestion to check your APN - as though this was something one had at one's fingertips. Many other minutes of searching and fumbling led me to:
Settings->Options->Advanced Options->TCP
then you see your password for APN:

I then googled around for the AT&T APN and found:
(again, I can't post a web link - sigh)

For example:
AT&T
APN: wap.cingular
Username: WAP AT CINGULARGPRS DOT COM
Password: CINGULAR1

(apparently, I can't post an email address either - sigh)

The password on my device was (apparently) incorrect. I updated it and the problem with Google sync went away.

I hope this saves others a few minutes of their time - especially as Google sync seems to be one of the few ways to migrate your contacts out of BB.
good luck!
