UMA not on 4.6.1.76, how about 4.6.1.94?

Oh well, I bought an 8900 on E-Bay this week, which was a T-Mobile Germany device. It shipped with 4.6.1.76. I have found previously, the way you can tell if you have UMA enabled in your device, is, in Options --> Mobile Network, you should see a dialog for "Connection Preferences." And then you choose Network over Wi-Fi, the opposite, etc... 4.6.1.76 doesn't have this option. And, as well, UMA does NOT kick in over Wi-Fi.
Now I know some of you might think that because it's a T-Mobile DE device, it will not have UMA at all. However, I vaguely remember, when I got my T-Mo USA 8320, which seems like 30 years ago, the initial OS version did NOT have that Connection Preferences option, and, even form posts on BB forums somewhere, no one had UMA with that OS. only when the second OS was released, did it have it, and then UMA worked (which was pretty muyc the time T-Mo actually started with UMA) . So, I still (want to, at least) believe that the OS version can affect whether there is UMA support or not.
I am assuming the Rogers 4.6.1.94 does have the connection Preferences options, as I have read UMA success on the 8900, and, we all know it's supported on the device.
Any comments?
Does anyone have a 4.6.1.76 version with the "Connection Preferences" option?
Or, more specifically, if you DO have UMA rnning, which OS version do you all have?
I will be searching for .94!

I believe UMA service depends on the service books pushed out from the carrier. T-Mo has been notorious for not pushing service books unless they officially support the device.
Per your question, I'm running 4.6.1.94 and using UMA.

i'm usign UMA on my router at home as well... and UMA is carrier specific... if i use a tmo 8320 on rogers, i will not have UMA, as its a firmware issue... no way around it... so you using a tmo germany here on tmo or att will not work... just like if you got a rogers 8900 and tried to use UMA on tmo, it wont work...

you will still be able to use wifi tho, to browse and get emails etc etc, however UMA will not work...

UMA is carrier / device specific. If you want UMA you must get a phone from that specific carrier in order to use it.

Thanks for the responses. Well, I am pretty sure UMA is not "Service Booked," as the 8320 I still have, with UMA, doesn't have any different Service Books than the new 8900.
@Cory Sheuer - Have you actually TRIED to use a T-Mo 8320 on Rogers UMA? And it didn't work? Or you BELIEVE it not to work?
I'm only asking, because I'd be a little bummed to have to wait for T-Mo to come out with the 8900, and, I already bought this for $600, and, it won't be of full use ...
And, if it's true, that REALLY sucks! I moved from the Bold, specifically to have one device for UMA, plus the 3.2 mp camera. (But, I still will keep the Bold). Oh well, you can't have everything ... where would you put it  ?

Correct, UMA is not controlled by Service Books. It's controlled by coding deep in the firmware (not the software but the firmware.)
You only get UMA with a device branded from your carrier.
This is why I don't already have a Javelin. I'm waiting for TMo to release because I want UMA.

UMA (not Thurman)
I got it on my new Rogers Curve. Works fantastic! Connects auto to my home wifi and I can use data/voice simulataneous like on 3G!
Question- I know I don't get charged for local calls when I plan voice over UMA but do I get charged for long distance? Canada? North America? Europe?
Any info guys? I didn't actually sign up for anything on Rogers so I'm not sure how it works.

If you didn't sign up for anything then all your calls are charged as if you were on EDGE. It's just another way to connect. If you sign up for the TalkSpot plan then you get your UMA calls for free.

Depends on what your plan is. If you get free long distance when on EDGE then you'll get it on UMA. If you are charged for it on EDGE then you'll be charged for it on UMA.

It doesn't appear to be able to be enabled without being able to change your devices vendor id.

the way the calls are routed are... you make a call via wifi, goes to internet service provider, then routed to your cell phone carrier, off to the other persons carrier (landline or cell) and then to the other persons phone...
so as you can see your carrier is in there to know what is going on...
the benefit to UMA, is no matter what... if you are connected to wifi you calls will be free if you have the talkspot option on your account... so you could be at home, or a friends house, starbucks, or in england... its all the same... make sense?

So for $15/month I can basically roam on any wifi connection and make free calls anywhere? But if I don't I get charged how much? |

ok... so if you were to go to the states for example... you are on t-mobiles network... now you make a call on edge, you pay the roaming fee pulus long distances... BUT if you have talkspot/UMA, and you connect to wifi and call on the UMA... the carrier (rogers) has NO idea where in the world you are... so if you would be either billed local minutes as if you were calling from your calling area(if you dont have the talkspot option) or if you have the option then its all unlimited...
why dont you head to the rogers website and read up on the talkspot option...
