Question Question on traveling with the BB

Please Login to Remove!

Okay, I am flying to Alaska in June and obviously this will require me to skip quite a few time zones....

I have put the flight itinerary into the calendar and I found it to be a hassle trying to mark every flight in another time zone so I ended up giving up and listed everything on my current time zone...

Now, will my BlackBerry automatically switch time zones and what time the device displays each time it recognizes I've landed in a new time zone? If it does, will that screw up my saved appointments in my calendar??

You should enter the schedule and your appointments in the timezone in which they will occur... not that difficult. Then when you arrive, change the TZ and your appointments will all be spot on.

Details here:
Why doesn't my time update correctly when I change Time Zones? - BlackBerryFAQ

Good luck.

That requires me to know each time zone I land in... I can't say I know them all off hand.

I guess that is what Google is for... lol.

Are you flying? You don't need each and every stop and take off in your BB...you will have your ticket at hand. I've done the same as you entering every stopover, and it was a laborious process, and unncessary I came to find out, as you know you will have to have your ticket/boarding pass with you anyway.

I do put it ALL in a calendar entry for the initial departure TO and on the date returning, each flight # and time, all in one calendar entry. That way I do have it as a reference.

And don't get me wrong, you can do it your way. But remember those times on the ticket for each departure are in the local time, not all in one TZ.

Here, for you: Time Zone

a lot of travel websites offer to download an appt or a calendar entry for your travel. I do this for my flight, car, and hotel. It is usually a .vcs or icalendar entry (i think). If you save these, they will save in your calendar correctly in your timezone, so when you change to the destination timezone they are correct. Example, if you have a return flight at 7pm EST and you live in MST, it would show as 5pm MST. When you change to the local timezone it will adjust accordingly. The other nice thing about this is all your info is in your calendar appt (reservation number, hotel location, etc.).

I travel every week just about and I never have a problem.

TDC, I agree that it would be nicer if you could enter the departure and arrival for a flight in different time zones, but as noted above it really isn't that big a deal. In answer to your other question, unlike a regular phone the BB won't automatically set itself to the local time zone when it re-establishes contact at your destination; you have to go in and manually set it. Some people find this a pain, I don't. It gives you the option of choosing to stay on your home TZ on a short trip, and I find it especially convenient when I'm someplace like SW Indiana where I'm crossing back and forth between timezones. The BB will translate time from the zone an appointment is tagged with to the zone I've set it to display. Make sure your departure times are tagged with the correct TZ or you could have a nasty surprise when you get to the airport.

I always keep my BB in my home TZ. I change the time, just like my watch. And like the OP, I do enter every flight segment. I just hate to refer to the ticket for time. I enter the times as given on the ticket. So if, for examplr, I'm flying to Vancouver, I'll enter a 1100 departure time rom Toronto, and a 1300 arrival in Vancouver. Then in flight, I'll change the hour portion of the BB clock back 3 hours.
