Default 8300 camera not as good as the Pearl

Please Login to Remove!

I don't care what settings you use, the 8300 camera is not as good as I would thiit should be. I only had the Pearl for a short period of time and it seemed to out perform the 8300 camera.

I have tried with and without flash and holding the device very still while taking the image, it is crappy. Not that I depend on it but 2mp should look better than this!

Other than that, I like the device and it is a keeper. Just a little dissapointed that RIM failed to do as good as it could have been.

I agree the Pearl camera is better.

To make the 8300 pictures look better, I read a tip that you can resize the image to 800x600 or even 1024x768 after shooting in 1600x1200. Apparantly, the "compacting" seems to make the image sharper. Try that.

I think the 8300 camera is somewhat better than the 8100 camera. If you haven't already check out the two links for some nice comparisons and samples.

Hmmm, the 8300 images shown on this site look a good bit better than mine. Looks like I need to try it again and see what I am doing wrong! I am an avid DSLR owner (Canon 1Ds) and I thought I knew what I was doing. <vbg>

I wholeheartedly disagree that the Pearl camera is better. The flash, sharpness and colors are far better with the Curve ... but that doesn't mean it's near a dedicated digicam's quality. Still, I was actually amazed how much better the Curve was over the Pearl in this regard.

The colors certainly seem more vibrant with the Curve when compared with the Pearl.

The Pearl's colors do look washed out in most pictures. The Curve's colors do look more vibrant but not perfect. There's a definite improvement on the Curve's 2MP camera.

I'm not saying that RIM didn't do a sufficient job with the camera on the 8300 but, again, MP is just one spec that influences image quality. Merely looking at a camera's MP rating doesn't tell you anything but the resolution. It's certainly possible to have a 50MP camera that produces totally worthless images if its light sensitivity, contrast ratio and other specs aren't at least adequate. Solely looking at a camera's MP rating is like buying a car solely based on the horsepower without considering anything else...

Do remember it took many software revisions for the Pearl to get where it is in stability and image quality.

YOU need to stop harping on the "2mp does not matter" thing! I heard you the first time. I am well aware of the aspects of digital photography, been doing it for years now and I DO realise that the number of pixels is not the whole ball of wax!

Thanks but give it a break, please!

Its OK, I am just saying that I am a little dissapointed in it in comparison to the Pearl. I owned the Pearl and I remember it taking better images than what I am seeing on my 8300.

I love the 8300, just a little dissapointed in this one thing!

If you are buying the Curve just for the camera, well I am not sure about that!

Anyone use Roxio's image transform features? It is supposed to fix the sharpness issue with the images. It even has an "autofix" feature that supposedly diagnoses and fixes common problems.

The camera sharpness in these phones, Both the Pearl and the Curve vary from unit to unit.
Again that mass production thing falls back on RIM and production testing. My girlie was a Pearl and her's takes great pics, but my sisters Pearl takes terrible pics. It
Depends on luck these days and you either get a winner or a lemon, kind of like a crap shoot! My Curves camera is decent at best! My Verizon
LG VX9400 has a 1.3 megapixel shooter in it, and it takes better pics then my Curve! But if you ask me, RIM could have done a better job with the camera this time around! We'll just have to wait and see what's up RIMS sleeve with the 9XXX series! Hopefully it'll be the ultimate device we've all been waiting for!

greggebhardt, I have similar issue as you do with my 8300. I hope it is just a bad lemon on my 8300. I am going to ask my buddy to test his 8300 and do comparsion between his curve and mine in image quality...
