Question Your BlackBerry Past: How Many Have You Owned?

Please Login to Remove!

Here's a topic idea that just popped into my head.

I was thinking back, thinking about how many BlackBerries (and other handhelds) I've had. And it occurred to me that this is something we don't often talk about here.

How many of us are on our first? Second? Third or fourth?

So, I thought it might be fun to run down our individual device histories, as it were.

My first CrackBerry was one of the most unusual. It was the AOL Mobile Communicator, a first or second generation BlackBerry that was reprogrammed by AOL to let me use my AOL Email and Instant Messenger on the go. Most of the other BlackBerry functions were removed when AOL installed their special OS. The hardware was actually a RIM 950, and it looked about like one of these:

...except the housing was a dark, translucent blue and it had AOL logos on it. I owned it from early 2002, until August of 2003, when AOL decided to discontinue the Mobile Communicator service. But they offered me a special discount on the device that ended up replacing it for me:

A T-Mobile Color Sidekick!

Say what you will about the SK, at the time, it did more things than the BBs did out of the box (remember the days when you had to BUY REQWireless WebViewer to have a BB web browser if you were on the BlackBerry Web Client?), and for a lot less per month. At the time, my cell phone carrier (the old AT&T Wireless) was charging an arm & a leg for BB service! They didn't even have one low price for unlimited usage in those days! You paid however much a month for some low amount of MBs of service, then you paid several cents a KB for anything over that. But the SK as a data only device (which is how I used the AOLMC, since the original BBs weren't phones) was only $30 a month for unlimited usage, with a web browser, so I went with it. And I used it for a year and a half, until...

February of 2005. My CSK was old and worn, and the SKII had been out for a bit. I was very close to upgrading to one, and upgrading my cell phone (by then a Nextel i90c) to an i830. But then I decided I wanted a Bluetooth phone, and Nextel's ONLY BT phone at the time was, you guessed it... the BlackBerry 7520.

Well, I did some homework, found out that I should be able to do everything I did on the SK with the BB 7520, hopefully more reliably. It would give me a Bluetooth phone, and I'd only have to carry one device instead of 2. I made the switch, and never looked back. I had a few significant complaints about the SK, most notably its weak battery life and the lack of reliability from the data servers. No such problems with the 7520. The rock solid reliability of the BB shined through, and showed me that it definitely WAS the superior device for my needs. It served me faithfully for nearly 2 years.

Nextel, on the other hand, didn't. Sprint merged with them, and the rock solid Nextel network went downhill, and Sprint stopped releasing new Nextel BlackBerries.

So, in December '06, I jumped ship for T-Mobile and my 8700g, which is serving me quite well.

Besides using a Sidekick for awhile, I've played with Windows Mobile phones in stores that have live display models. And I've played with a Treo once or twice, as well. Having tried the rest, I'm convinced that the BlackBerry is the best, and keeps getting better all the time, and that shows no sign of changing!

So, I'm on "CrackBerry" # 3, and counting. How about the rest of you?

The thread is going to turn out like a dating history with scandal and judgment.

I started out on a run-of-the-mill 850 down in Florida and during a relocation ended up with a 957 in Minnesota. That one held for almost two years... At one point w/ the 850 I remember they gave me a software upgrade that took too much memory up and I did my first wipe to get restarted again.

While still in MN I ended up with a T-Mobile 6210 and due to coverage issues moved just a few months later to AT&T (the old one) with the same device. This device came with me a year or so later to Connecticut.

In CT I ended up on Cingular with a 6710 for a few months before a contract got me into a Nextel 6510 (later a 7510). It was during the Nextel phase that I decided I wanted my own non-work BB stuff, BES, etc. and there was this incident in front of a restaurant, Ted's Montana Grill, in S. Windsor, CT that umm... well.... destroyed the 7510 and at that point I had been thinking of switching to the 7100i.

This gave me an opportunity to go to VZW (which where I live had the best coverage, and for whom I work for the best discounts) and the 7130e. My first (and hopefully last) SureType... the day of the 8703e release to business my order was in. And then I started getting frustrated due to international travel. Voila.... 8830, day they start taking orders, etc.

I'm on my ninth BB then...

So I've had one too many BBs when I think of it. -Pk

I got my first blackberry in 2005, it was an unlocked cingular 7280 which i have to say I loved to death.

From that I went to an unlocked 7100t, which I hated because of the damn suretype.

From that, came the 8700c, also unlocked, from that I went to a 7290, which I've had until last friday when I switched from Rogers to Telus and picked up a brand new 8830.

I still have my Nextel 7520 from about 3 years ago. It still works great and does everything I need. I have wanted to change out, but I can't seem to outweigh the pros of this unit.

3 for me. I started with the Nextel 7100i and switched to the Nextel 7520. I recently switched to Sprint and have the 8703e. By the way, Sprint will have the new Blackberry 8830 world phone sometime in July they said. I don't like it and will keep my 8703e but for those that want the latests and need a world phone that would be a good option.

I've owned an assortment of PDAs over the years, the most recent being a HP 4350.

My first BlackBerry was purchased just a couple of months ago. It was a 7290. Got it for ~$30 shipped used off of eBay. I purchased it so that I can teach my wife how to use it as she's getting one (8700 I think) for work and they don't teach you how to do anything.

At least technology-wise they don't.

Sadly, it had a bad antenna and I would randomly lose signal.

Which brings me to BlackBerry #2: 8800.

Both are with Cingular/The New AT&T.

850 (corporate)
I got this in about 2000. It was fairly unreliable then, but when 911 happened, and many of of us (at my company) were displaced from our offices, these things really shined! They absolutely helped my firm, which was badly hurt, get back on its feet.

957
This was a corporate upgrade in 2002. The BB had proven it's worth, but most of us wanted the larger screen.

7290
Another upgrade in about 2005. This was given to me without my asking. I think they (the company) changed carriers at the time for better coverage.

Next ????
This should happen next month when my phone contract expires. I am sick of carrying a BB, phone ans a pager. I am currently evaluating which device to purchase (of my own) and putting my corporate e-mail on it.
