From what I have seen released at CES, email and other features are only available using the bridge and tethered to your BB. That might have only been the engineering mock-up however. More things should start to come out soon, I hope.

Source is my link to the Gizmodo hands on report (click the "can they" phrase if it's hard to see in your browser).

I'm hearing now this is deliberate in the WiFi-only model for "security" reasons, since presumably admins can't trust users to connect to trusted WiFi hotspots. Meaning the WiFi Playbook is being positioned exclusively as a corporate device.

So much for being an iPad competitor.

Not entirely true. According to the video interviews posted on Engadget there are 3rd party e-mail clients, like gmail. In addition, there are e-mail, PIM and Calender apps coming, but at launch there will just be the Bridge.

There are always options that are web based - Google calendar,...

It makes sense - RIM, for security reasons, has to keep coporate data from being stored on the playbook.

Yes they are. But the web mail yahoo gmail hotmail and such you can still do. So for the launch they will be relying on pre-exsisting BB users to teather via bluetooth. At my company we do not allow bluetooth teahtering. But maybe in the summer with the 4G sprint model you can enterprise activate. At that point I believe my company may look into getting one for testing.

That's the issue I still can't resolve, that will have a huge impact on the success of this device. My IT department will not change BES settings to allow additional devices. It is the reason I cannot get a BT keyboard. I don't think that my circumstances are unique.

If people rush out and buy this thinking they can bridge to their BB and then they cannot, this could be a public relations disaster. I hope there is a way to do this. I think there are a sufficient number of people who want a 'big screen for their BB' with additional capabilities that this will sell.

Of course, I just wish they would offer a 'Bridge app' for Android tablets, the ipad, and netbooks...

I find it hard to believe that this wouldn't be a configuarable option (eventually).
It is enterprise ready, but just as BB are sold to non-enterprise consumers with 'social' data plans, RIM is aware that they need to address a wide market. This would be easily managed with allowing these settings to be configurable, be it an IT Dept, or your mother.

From everything I have read, it will be web based email and calendaring as bundled and it will require the bridge to connect to your BES calendar/email. Policies will control how long the data is cached on the PlayBook as well as if you can even connect it to the BlackBerry in the first place.

The PlayBook also uses the same secure bluetooth connection that they use for their smart card reader. Many IT departments don't allow BT pairing, but I think if these things end out in the hands of executives, you might find some exceptions cropping up.

BTW: I wouldn't want to have PlayBooks connecting to my BES. The CAL cost is high enough already. I don't want to double the number of licenses just because people grab PlayBooks.

If using the Playbook requires ANY policy modifications for an individual by the IT department this thing is dead coming out of the gate. Many large corporation IT departments flat out do not make policy changes for individuals. Like I already mentioned that was pretty much the death of BT keyboards.

[if] Given the policy mods requirement, there is [for many] no competitive advantage. Might as well get an ipad 2, Galaxy Tab2, Moto Xoom,... heck maby even HP will have something good to show.

Give me bridge and I want a Playbook, no bridge...meh
