Just got a refurb 8703 with an OEM battery but the display shows a battery and a red slash across it. Does that mean it is a bad battery?

If the battery is in then yes that means it's probably a bad battery or you don't have the battery connected properly. Normally that icon comes up when the battery isn't connected whatsoever.

Make sure you have the battery connected correctly, and then try charging the phone. If the problem persists then I suggest purchasing a new battery of the same type.

You could try software updates as well.

if the battery is TOTAL draned the battery will show as a bad battery. I recently bought 5 8700 c-s2 batteries off of ebay (they where OEM) 4 of the 5 came up as bad but; after leaving them in the phone and charging for a short time (ten mintues or so) they charged up full fine.

Had this problem and kept trying charging the battery and/or removing/replacing battery. Sometimes could not use the BB for days at a time.

Finally, in frustration I disassembled the phone. Lo and behold, one of the battery contacts on the circuit board (of the four) was corroded green. Used a cloth to wipe off some (just a little). Tried a pencil eraser and rubbed off more. Finally, I took a push pin and scraped the contact until it was a clean square like the other battery contacts on the board. I wasn't sure how thick the conctacts were, so I used LIGHT pressure when scraping.

Voila ! I now have a working 'berry !
