Am I missing something obvious?
[emilylitella]Never mind![/emilylitella]
I thought I had set the APN, but it was blank when I went and looked at it. I set it to wap.voicestream.com and now all is good...

Has anyone else confirmed to get it to work on WiFi only after following the aforementioned instructions? I'm trying to get operamini beta to run, all I get is the 2 security access prompts, and then the "Installing" bar, then a failed message. Mobile access is off, and WiFi options are set to "WiFi only".
I should note that I do NOT have the data plan, do you think that's a deciding factor?

While I can't speak to whether or not the presence or absence of a Data Plan would affect the outcome, these symptoms are similar to what I experienced before I set the Options>Advanced Options>TCP>APN setting. For T-Mobile users the correct setting for that item is wap.voicestream.com, not sure what the proper setting is for other carriers, but the FAQs/searching should have information on that.

AS NJBB has indicated, mine is running on WiFi as I hoped. I have it running on an 8820 and 8320, one using WiFi, the other WiFi/UMA. I did not change the APN settings as indicated above and all is still running fine on both devices with no extra configuration.

Ok I will give a aquick lowdown on my bb 8320 on tmobile with the bis plan. My problem was the tcp setting under settings advanced tcp. And change the apn to wap.voicestream.com and put username and password that you use to log into tmobile.com my account page. I found this option when I tried minuet and it wouldn't work till I did that. Details for other carriers are on that tethering page on this forum sit or pinstack forum site now reboot. Next oneither wifi or the mobile network download opera mini beta 2 version 4. Since you added the apn info when you install opera it will not error out. Now opera will work on wifi or mobile network. Now the blackberry browser will either time out if you go to a web page or say the network coverage is not enough to do this action error or something like that. What you need to do is reboot. When I say reboot turn off and take out battery. Put back in and both blackberry browser and opera should work fine on wifi and mobile network. I could not load opera from the desktop app so I just did ota on my phone. I have not tried it yet on the 8820 yet. The earlier suggestion to turn off wifi for five minutes then blah blah suggested earlier in the thread does not work for everyone since opera needs that info to install on the first run. I prefer the bb browser but opera works on the sites bb browser doesn't. Learn the hotkeys and it will help. I you don't have tmobile look for the carrier you have and look for thqat configure under the tethering help. My tmobile username is my phone number bty. My thumbs hurt but I will try to help the people who need help with this. If u tried my method and it doesn't work reboot a couple more times. Last resort wipe handset but don't jl comand it as I am told. Always do dvice backup under bb desktop before you change things like this on ur bb

I can try it sometime this week. I think i will try it with wifi only on that way i dont inadvertently go to the internet and cause that person's sim card to be charged. you may need to ask that wap.voicestream.com be added to your account profile. Mike have you followed my method and tried to get it working?
this was the tethering link i was talking about.

On a side not mak sure you fully close out of bb browser. You may want to expriment saying no to one or the other prompt instead of allow when you install opera.

Opera Mini works with a generic data plan (non-BlackBerry plan).
However I don't know if it works on WiFi without BB data. I would assume that if you have a data plan and if the APN is setup correctly, and you've got uma running (lowercase uma is fine), then Opera Mini probably would work without a BlackBerry plan, just like it works fine on BlackBerries with lowercase 'edge' and 'gprs'.
For more information about successfully using a BlackBerry on a generic non-BlackBerry plan, see the FAQ in the General Discussion forum.

Any updates?
Does anyone have any new info about getting Opera to work on an 8820 without Data? I have tried several versions, and I even signed up for BIS for a day to download all the service books. Right now my TCP settings are blank, does that matter if I dont have Data? I really want to get Opera working on wifi because the BB Browser is terrible...
thanks!

I've the same problem.
I have Fido.ca phone plan with NO BB data plan as of yet and trying to get Opera to work. Seems there are two other people here with the same issue.
I would think the APN setting is for proxy browsing. Why would you need to have this setting for just Wifi usuage?
Thanks.
