In order to upgrade, dataviz wants you to believe that you are required to register and then you have to provide an e-mail for them to send the update to your blackberry so you can install it OTA. Then they only allow you 5x to download it from your registered account and it's all OTA and what's worse is clicking on the link counts as 1x even if you didn't click "send link to e-mail"!
All this is time consuming, annoying and really can be avoided, especially the registration. I will further explain what I posted above so you can avoid all the time waste.
***Before continuing you must have RIM OS 4.5 or higher installed else "docs to go" won't work.***
copy/paste this to your url bar
support.dataviz.com/support.srch?docid=14179
or you can go further and copy/paste this link that goes directly to the download:
download.dataviz.com/support/patches/documentstogo/blackberry/documentstogo1002_ota.zip
Now you have a zip file of the newest version of docstogo.
To install it:
1) Unzip it
2) Move this documentstogo1002_ota folder to your blackberry:
Now it's easier to move this folder to your media card -- given in the instructions here: support.dataviz.com/support.srch?docid=14179
but let's say you don't have a media card and want to put the files directly on your blackberry:
(only follow the directions "a" though "j" if you don't have a media card)
a) open up blackberry desktop manager
b) click on media
c) click on "start" under "Media Manager" (accept the terms if this is the first time you open it)
d) click on "manage pictures" -- this will get you into the "Media Manager"
You may get a pop up, "Blackberry Not Ready -- Please insert media card." Just click "OK"
e) Under "My Devices" on the left toward the bottom -- Click on the "documents" folder
I tried to move the "documentstogo1002_ota" folder directly to the media manager but it only copied the folder and not the files so you'll need to follow steps "f" through "i."
f) right click on the large square under "documents" where it reads, "There are no media files that match the filter settings" -- this will bring up the "right click" menu
g) Left click on "New Folder" and you'll see a folder appear. You can rename this to "docstogo" if you wish (right click and rename)
h) open the "documentstogo1002_ota" folder (from where you unzipped it) and go to the "Edit" menu and click on "Select All"
i) In media manager, make sure the "new folder" under the "documents" folder is selected and drag all those files contained in the "documentstogo1002_ota" folder to the large bottom box in the media manager that reads "There are no media files that match the filter settings"
j) A "copy files box" pops up. "Copy with no conversions" should be selected.
Click "Ok" then wait for all the files to be copied. Watch them being copied because it's important that all 55 files are copied else it won't work.
You'll now see a bunch of folders in the box which have the same name as the files in the "documentstogo1002_ota" folder. Click Exit and close the desktop manager. Then disconnect the blackberry from your computer.
3) Select "Media" on your blackberry.
4) Click the menu key and select "explore"
5) Click on "Device Memory" then "home" then "user" then "documents" (or if you have it on your media card then you can select "Media Card" and find the documentstogo1002_ota folder -- the place where you copied this folder to previously)
6) click on the new folder or docstogo or what ever you called it
7) click on "DTG Install.jad"
8) A download screen will pop up
You'll see:
"Name: Documents To Go" Version: 1.002.016
9) Click download and it will install the update. You don't have to be online to do this for it downloads directly from the folder you're in.
It will ask if you want to replace the current version if you had a previous one installed. Click yes.
10) You'll see a screen: Downloading Documents To Go" and it will install.
11) You'll see "Device must be rebooted to complete install" click "reboot"
9) Once updated you'll want to delete all those files:
a) Select "Media" on your blackberry.
b) Click the menu key and select "explore"
c) Click on "Device Memory" then "home" then "user" then "documents"
Now you'll see the new folder -- click on the menu key and select "Delete" and click "Yes"
All done.
