Default Version 3G Service vs 1XEV

Please Login to Remove!

I have a Storm 2 and my wife has a Tour (Verizon). My phone shows my service is 3G and wife's phone show 1XEV when we are in the same location. Which is better and how do I get the better service on both phones?

Thanks

So why does one phone show 3G and the other 1XEV? Why wouldn't both show same?

I believe is OS related.
I.e the tour's OS is set to show 1XEV and your storm Os is set to show 3G.

Slow down folks...

Nothing to do with the OS. It has EVERYTHING to do with the network.

GSM phones show 3G.
CDMA (Verizon/Sprint) phones show 1XEV.

They are different network designs.

Better is totally subjective. I have little to no use for CDMA as I travel internationally and CDMA is not as widely adopted outside of North America.

Choose the carrier that works for you. Then worry about whether the icon reads 3G or 1XEV.

NJ, they are both using CDMA devices...
and I had read somewhere that a OS 5 for Storm 2 changes the icon from 1XEV to a 3G.

Both phones are Verizon phones and they both show the same settings when I click on "mobile Network Options"
Data Service On
While Roaming On
Mobile Network Verizon
Network Selection Mode Automatic B
Network Technology Global

So if the settings are the same (and bot have 5.0 OS) why the difference in what it shows and is it something that I should try to get straightened out?

Its not an option to change.
One OS 5 version has the code to make it show 3G, while another OS version doesn't.
Also Os's are device specific, so the Tour OS 5's may not even have the code.

1XEV is Verizon's 3G (well, some of us believe it is 2.9G when compared to real 3G)

On those devices, it is exactly the same. RIM / Verizon / CDMA Carriers have been toying with the 3G symbol on Tour OS builds that were leaked. Official releases from VZW have always indicated 1XEV on my Tour. I have two Storm 2 users at work and I believe the indicator is different depending on which theme they use.

IMHO, it is simply a way to market and tout 3G. Probably smart in their fight for subscribers to show it as 3G!!

There is a theme that will accomplish changing 1XEV to 3G though and works on the 9630.

BlackberryOS - Your Blackberry RIM Software and RIM Applications Source - 3G For All Theme Changes 1XEV logo to 3G on all Tours!

Check it out, there are a few different flavours of it and it works great, even has a weather slot in the top right hand corner.

The only down side to it is that it could get kind of confusing, if you ever go into an area that only offers 1X service. But the post mentions all that.

Ops, hopefully you don't mind sharing info from a "rival" site. If you do, feel free to remove it, I won't be offended
