Default New Curve User, Installation Questions

Please Login to Remove!

Hello All,
When I download 3rd party software for he curve, then all come with an ALX file and a COD file. Do I install both? If I only need the ALX file, what is the COD file used for?
Thanks

You need both together on your PC.. then you use the Desktop Manager Application Loader to load that onto your BB.. the alx is the instructions to the loader.. the cod is the application itself.

I recall that when I download an application through DM only the alx file will transfer through the app. loader. The apps work fine. Or am I off here

Yes, I did the same thing. I only loaded the ALX and it seems to be fine. I figured the the COD was for older BBs. It's strange the the application loader does not default to CODs, if they are really necessary. I guess I'll try it again.

alx controlled what's installed depending on your make & model(carrier/blackberry model).

In fact you can hard code(fix) alx to remove stuff ( like PTT -love to hate it!) from your blackberry completely or install non carrier themes that RIM put out but your carrier (or your OS's Carrier decided to disable).

Yes, I had to remove some trial software and now I understand:
On the 8300, you only need to install the ALX file, and that will automatically install the appropriate COD file.

Thank you all for your help.

How can I hard code (fix) alx files to install non carrier themes (or languages) that RIM put out but the carrier decided to disable?

languages are not locked. What languages are loaded depend on the OS you are installing. I posted in another one of your threads about how to get the languages. For themes, follow these instructions.
