Default Do I need to buy anything? (BES 5 upgrade)

Please Login to Remove!

Hi.

Getting back into BES (and this forum) after a few years absence and having worked on other technologies for some time.

The plan is to upgrade a reasonably large BES 4.1 infrastructure (approx 4000 users) to v5.

The question I have is what do I need to buy? If anything? I've read conflicting reports over whether the SRPs and CALs are compatibile with v5. If they are compatible, can I just download the trial version, install, then move the SRPs and CALs when my BES 4.1 servers are offline?

I'm really sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, I have searched - I promise!

Thanks in advance,

Chris.

the upgrade is not free, it is about $999.00 USD per SRP.
CALs for the most part will transfer over, cept for an SBS or free ones you may have aqquired.

I posted a lot of info here on upgrading

Thanks knottyrope. I've just had a read through your post on the BB site. Very useful.

Am I right in thinking that you pay for RIM to upgrade the SRP keys to "BES 5 enable" them, thus allowing BES 5 to connect to the SRP address with that SRP key?

I assumed that would be the case but I had someone else try to convince me that the current SRP keys will just work when entered into BES 5. I haven't tried doing that as I was fearful of SRP lockout.

If you have a support contract, the upgrade is free.

Are all your 4000 user devices in contract with O2 UK?

Your old SRPs will work with BESv5. What you are paying for is an upgrade which will provide you access to the Upgrade Software or in some cases the full version of the software, depending on where you get your support from.

For us, the upgrade to 5 just works with the ver. 4 SRP. We upgraded before we bought the upgrade license. So, it looks like RIM does not enforce or check it. But you need to buy the upgrade so your company is in compliance.

If you don't need most of the policies and you don't need HA, you could also upgrade to BES Express, which is free. But with 4000 users, you might want to have HA.
