Default E-mail deletion delay on handheld

Please Login to Remove!

Is there any setting that affects the time an e-mail is deleted on the handheld after it is deleted on the users desktop? We are using BES 4.0 & MS Exchange 2003. New e-mails appear on the desktop and the handheld almost immediately but I have noticed that it generally takes 3 to 4 minutes before e-mails are deleted on the handheld after being deleted on the desktop.

The timeout for delete/read messages from the handheld and vice versa I believe is BES checks for it every 20 mins. I've searched and searched through the SQL database and I don't think it is changable.

Sorry. :(

Well, that's a bummer. Another quirk of BES I guess. Or maybe it's a feature/bug.

All in all RIM did an excellent job in releasing a functional server with v4, what they didn't do was add much configuration ability. The server itself is very "vague". I would imagine that in future feature/service packs they will add some configuration tools so that admins can have more control.

I think it's mainly for overhead issues. Basically all BES is another desktop client. Only that it also acts as an interface for your device to send/read mail/calendar/etc... When you put 500 users on a BES, you pretty much have 500 desktop clients running on that machine. Can become quite fatigued if it checks for EVERYTHING instantly like your regular outlook/notes/groupwise client. There has to be some tradeoff somewhere to relieve some of the overhead made by checking these. I think 20 mins is pretty reasonable however, since most people aren't sitting side by side with their desktop and blackberry using both. It's usually one or the other, depending on if they're at their desk or not. So 99% of those users won't even notice the lag time with email.

Calendar and address book is another thing however...

You should be able to do a "Reconcile Now" from the mail app on the Blackberry to force it whenever you want to. I have noticed that if you're running your Outlook in cached Exchange mode that you'll have to do a manual send/recieve on the desktop and a Reconcile Now for the changes to be immediate.

I haven't tried reconcile now for GW BES. I'm actually content with it ATM since I rarely pay attention to the thing sitting at my desk..
