Question BES 4.1 and Exchange 2003 SP2 on ESX 3.5 u1

Please Login to Remove!

Hi All, I have been running Exchange 2003 SP2 on ESX 3.5 for around 4 months now with no problems. BES 4.1 Has been on a physical box for at least 8 months. Yesterday i decided to vitualise the BES4.1 box. All ran smoothly and Exchange and BES now run on the same ESX server.

However after a couple of hours of the BES server running we started to see the following error in the Exchange server application log.

"Information Store (3228) First Storage Group: The version store for this instance (0) has reached its maximum size of 108Mb. It is likely that a long-running transaction is preventing cleanup of the version store and causing it to build up in size. Updates will be rejected until the long-running transaction has been completely committed or rolled back.
Possible long-running transaction: "

After this the Exchange server denied logins to mail and so stopped outlook for all our users.

Is there a way of limiting the BES server's impact on Exchange?

Can i limit the number of agents running on the BES server to reduce the Exchange thrashing?

When you say virtualize did you put the BES and db on its own physical drive?

Did you use seperate drives for tlogs, OS, and the store?

What is you current drive structure and how many users on ex and BES

This error has nothing to do with either BES or ESX.

You are running Exchange 2003 SP2 Standard edition. The mail store has a storoge liit built-in.

4 choices:
- Reduce the storage by purging mailboxes. You may have to do anoffline defrag after.

- License a new instance of Exchange 2003 Standard and split your users

- Upgrade to Exchange 2003 Enterprise

- Upgrade to Exchange 2007

No we are running Enterprise Exchange 2003. All our message stores are bigger than 72GB. We created a new Virtual SMTP server on the Exchange box because of possible corruption in it's queue.

Knottyrope: I have the Exchange and BES on the same ESX server and datastore although there are separate VM's.

ps. how many agents do you run? is it calculated on the number of BB users you have?

What else resides on that ESX server?

What are the specs for the host?
