Your looking at the Cingular 8700c given to me at the NYC launch event tonite in retail box. Everyone telling you there getting them, there getting them...NOPE. They gave out VOUCHERS so when its released you can get the device, sorry chrisambo, looks like your crap out of luck, no $40 parking for a blackberry this night, Device is crazy web browsing is amazing, MSNBC loads in 10 seconds, the screen is amazing, speed and usability jumped from 7290 ten fold. Very genius device...

SO, a few questions:
1. How did you get one if everyone else got vouchers?
2. How was the voice quality and speakerphone? In the news conference today they claimed it was a major improvement over past BBs.
3. What is the holster like (plastic, leather or crappy nylon like the 7100t?
4. The news conference seemed to say they could be ordered now from B2B sales but apparently they didn't inform Cingular B2b about it and word at the show?

Thanks for the pictures.

Not saying how i got it, only 7 devices were given out at this event, you can put the pieces together. Holster thank god is plastic and very fuctional. Great design, speakerphone is incredible, the best I have heard on a mobile phone. Even better than a nextel. Its not only super loud but super clear and clean. Date i heard from top cingular and RIM reps was Nov 21st, havnt heard another date.

How is typing on a keyboard that is 0.2" smaller than a 7290? Also the layout is different and the key shape is different. Any comments?

Yeah thats a good point, I am a big QWERTY keyboard fan on mobile devices so everything from treo650 to blackberry 7290 to sidekick to whatever I bang away on, I am fastest on 7290 this took a little getting used to but within 15min im back to normal, the only thing i dont like so much is the feel of the keys very plastic feeling, but different from 7290 not at firm or solid, just me maybe...I got messed up by the TINY shift key now and kept pressing 0 but just got over that.

call me biased, but it is indeed a spectacular device. When I first got it I was reminded of the time I moved from a 133/16mb/dialup to a Athlon 800/256mb/broadband.

the only drawback is that I personally prefer the soft 7105t keys to the hard plasticy ones...

While we are on this subject...

I was still able to thumb touchtype on the 8700 after getting used to it. It's not as fast as the 7290 keyboard for me but I'd say about almost as good after some pratice. The 7290 would be the epitome of BlackBerry thumb keyboards (other than the 950, which was really good).

That's still impressive for a QWERTY BlackBerry device that's shrinking to becoming almost 7100/Treo size. Still vastly superior to the Treo thumb keyboard.

Yeah thats a good point sometimes its hard to push the soft keys, but overall its still a STUPID device. Especially for blackberry like pocket pc with EVDO ok, treo 650 blazer with EDGE ok, but for a blackberry? this thing screams on the web and applications. Whats really cool is in messages when you select compose email or whatever in the to: field you can just start typing the contacts name and boom thats it no more seperate screen into address book then selected and back to messages.

I hope the keyboard is better than you are making it sound. That would be my big gripe with the T650, HP 6500, and other tiny keyboard devices. At some point you trade off efficiency for size (unless you have small hands which most men don't). Too many typing errors and you start hating to type and send messages. While I can type on the small round keys of the HP I really don't like to. The PPC 6700 keyboard is much easier to use but poor back lighting and layout hurt the usability. I sure liked the old 950 keyboard. Man could I type fast on that device! Of course it is 3.1" vs. 2.7" or almost 1/2 an inch narrower keyboard.

Yeah, good point mark. Still not 7290 keyboard status, but definatly workable.

To put size in perspective:
8700c 4.3" x 2.7" x .77" 4.7oz
7290 4.5" x 2.9" x.9" 4.9oz
5790 4.6" x 3.1" x .7" 4.9oz
HW6510 4.65" x 2.8" x .71" 5.8oz
Moto Q 4.6" x 2.5" x .45"
Nokia E61 4.6" x 2.74" x .55" 4.9oz

This means that the 8700c is more narrow than the HP (with hard to use keyboard) and only slightly thicker. I will take both with me to show and take pictures side by side if they let me.

It's still vastly better than the Treo keyboard. Just not as good as the 7290. Needless to say, I am still getting the 8700 when it comes out in Canada.

It's definitely a VERY usable BlackBerry keyboard. Just takes some time getting used to. Make sure to type slightly slower at first to get used to it.

Will take some pictures in holster. About IM cingular still hasnt signed up the services yet, AOL/MSN/Yahoo should be 1st Quarter 06. Nothing pre-loaded now. No you will definatly not be dissapointed with keyboard, I will also take some pics of the different themes it comes pre-loaded with, one of them was the "rogers" type theme corey was referring to in another post, they all look amazing.

Verichat should work. No plan changing at all whats weird is as soon as i got it I went to BWC and tried to change old 7290 PIN TO 8700 and it didnt work said invalid PIN, so i saw there is an icon on the desktop after u click register now that says individual email activation, I clicked tht opened web browser right up, asked for username and password, I signed in, and it said change handheld? Said yes, had my new PIN and IMEI there already, said ok, and that wwas it, no computer needed to change PIN, i have a feeling cingular will adopt the BWC-less version like t-mobile in the near future after seeing this.
