Intermittent Radio Switch-off
Please Login to Remove!
Hi all,
There does not seem any thread on this (tried searching with different keywords), so starting a new thread.
My Blackberry Torch 9800 keeps losing its Radio signal for no apparent reason: anything from between 15 minutes and 2 hours. The wi-fi stays on, but the network signal just goes off, so no phone calls come in.
If I go to "Manage Connections" and turn the mobile network back On again, the Rogers 3G signal comes back immediately, and the phone is good till I have the problem again - anything from a few minutes to a couple of hours later.
Have tried the usual - battery pull, update desktop software, upgrade to the latest Rogers sanctioned handheld OS, no luck.
Is this a hardware issue, and do I need to insist on a replacement?
Many thanks in advance for your help!

Try replacing your SIM. Or you maybe in a fringe area.

Re: Intermittent Radio Switch-off
Thanks, devnull. No, I'm not in a fringe area. The phone has been working fine for the past 6 months, this problem has happened only in the last one week.
Why SIM replacement? (Just curious what the problem could be....)

Re: Intermittent Radio Switch-off
I just re-read your original post and I'm probably off base. I was thinking the problem went away after you rebooted. Now I understand it's fixed when you simply toggle it in Manage Connections.
Sorry for the confusion.

Re: Intermittent Radio Switch-off
This problem could be fixed by an operating system update, although it sounds more like a hardware issue to me. The software solution is worth a try as it's free and should take less than an hour.

Re: Intermittent Radio Switch-off
unless you have an App that is interferring, i would go for a replacement.
did you add any that may cause problems? you can try deleting the added apps and see if it helps. Add them back one at a time. The radio generally does not stop unless it's hardware or interfered with.

Re: Intermittent Radio Switch-off
Hi rambo47, thanks.... but as I said in my original email, I did do an OS upgrade to the latest version. No use, the problem still remains.
However, devnull, your reply may not be all that offbase. My SIM card is 8 years old, and it is entirely possible that it is intermittently having issues? In any case, Rogers will do a warranty replacement if all else fails, but I thought that replacing the SIM is a logical first step anyway....
I hope I am thinking along the right lines.

Re: Intermittent Radio Switch-off
tsac, thanks, that seems logical....
The only software change I did was to upgrade BBM to the latest version. I'm presuming that that couldn't be the problem. As I mentioned in my earlier reply, I am going to try the SIM replacement first..... and then I think that the solution of last resort would be to replace the unit.

Re: Intermittent Radio Switch-off
Not sure if this helps - but for awhile I found that I was inadvertently tapping/touching the top right corner of my screen as I put it my pocket or whatever and inadvertently turned off the radio. I got into the habit of always hitting the top left key to lock the screen to prevent that from happening.
Not sure if it's the same issue but thought I would mention it.
Good luck.

Re: Intermittent Radio Switch-off
You'd mentioned SIM card replacement and the age of your SIM.
Now that more than a week has gone by, just wondering if the replacement SIM fixed your problem.
When I upgraded to my first 3G device on Rogers, my SIM had to be replaced too, done at the time of the upgrade. I was told that a "4000-series" SIM was required for 3G/data, and that the older series was fine for EDGE and below. Since my SIM card showed Rogers AT&T and my spare showed Rogers Cantel, I'd guess it wasn't up to spec. They let me keep my deactivated old SIMs as souvenirs. In any event, if you look at your existing SIM card, there are a series of numbers on the left-hand side. Look for 4000 somewhere around the end of the 2nd line to the start of the 3rd line (4000 is not the first set of numbers!). For example:
XXXXX
XXX40
00XXX
XXXXX
XXXX
If you have an older series, e.g. 3040 or something else, it might not be fully 3G compliant.
Disclaimer: Just repeating what was explained a couple years back regarding the "new" 3G network.
