I'm switching from BB 8830 (OS 4.5) to 9320 (OS 7.1). Considering that OS versions are far apart I'm not sure which version of Desktop Manager is better:

DM v6.1
DM v7.1

PC OS: Windows XP SP3 with POSReady updates (up to March 2019) or Windows 7 SP 1 (never updated).

I need to transfer the following data:

- device configuration
- profiles
- address book
- emails
- memopad

Update:

I have just found the following statement in my notes from around 2010:

"Every new DM software is backward compatible with every older BB handheld, going back to 1999".

So that would answer my question, as long as it really works that way in real life.

If you already have a version of Desktop Manager installed on a computer and it is working with the 8830, I would wait and see what happens with the 9320. If you can't do what you need with the 9320, then consider upgrading the Desktop Manager. But if you can do what you need, leave it alone.

Also, sounds like you have two computer systems you can use. If you do updgrade Desktop Manager, do it on one computer, of course, not both at the same time.

I don't remember in particular what issues, but I recall have problems that would come and then later resolve with a Windows update or a BlackBerry Desktop Manager update, and also problems on one computer while no problem on another computer. And that was back with Desktop Manager was supported! That's why I say leave well enough alone if the current installation is working for you with the new device.

Thanks for your answers. I have been using DM v5.01 with 8830 but it was just for backups and I have never had to actually restore anything using those backups. Would you actually suggest trying DM v5.01 with OS 7.1 device?

The Windows OS version is no problem, I have lots of different versions of Windows on multiboot machines, all backed up with disk images. And they are all clean because I only use Windows for a few selected applications and Linux for everything else.

As I say, whatever version of DM you have installed, try it with the OS 7 device. My guess is that if the backup works on that device then a restore should work on that device. If you want to reduce risk, then go ahead and load the latest DM on one of your computers and use that (or use that as well, running backups on two different systems).

However, a caveat. If it matters (if it's important) then have a plan in the event you need to restore and restore doesn't work.
