Research In Motion, which last month hired banking firms to help it explore strategic options, might break the company up. Reuters, citing the U.K.'s Sunday Times, says that RIM might fracture the company by splitting its handset business apart from its messaging network.
RIM may make its handset business a separate company, or sell it altogether, according to The Sunday Times. Potential acquirers of said handset business include Amazon and Facebook, and RIM's messaging network could also be sold off and/or opened up to competing platforms to help generate income.
Last, RIM might sell a large stake of the existing company to a larger market player, such as Microsoft. Neither The Sunday Times nor Reuters cited sources for their information.
