I downloaded this app to my BB. Does anyone know how I am charged for this? (i.e. can I sign in and run it in the background and am only charged when I send or receive Ims?, or does having it open and signed in cost me??)

Ok...I'm not sure if I have the unlimited plan. I use Cingular. Do you happen to know how many types of BB plans they have?

I've noticed that when an I'm is sent it comes under were my email goes, does that mean I am getting charged for sms messeging?

No, you are not getting charged for sms messaging

It just displays the incoming chats in the message list. They aren't actually coming in as SMS messages. Your phone is polling the google talk servers so you really need an unlimited data plan to use it.

Google Talk conversations show up in my messages list along with my emails. I am running the 4.2.1.126 Optus OS on my 8700c BB, which now separates SMS msgs from emails. However, since the Google Talk conversations appear in my Inbox, I want to be double sure that no one is peeking over my shoulder. I have verified that I'm connecting with the Internet Browser and was told by our IT guy that if I use that particular browser rather than the Cingular Browser, none of that traffic is logged.

I assume everthing is running through Google's servers and the conversations are only appearing in my messages along with emails simply b/c there is nowhere else for them to be shown, but I would hate to type something inappropriate for work and have it end up on our company servers b/c it sync'd my inbox with our Exchange server.

Am I being paranoid? Can anyone shed some light on this?

I'm not sure about how the Google Talk messages are routed. However that said, remember that Google tracks every move you make. Every one. Nothing gets deleted, everything is saved. So in the interest of peace of mind, your best bet is to avoid putting anything in a message that you would not want to face later.

Remember Privacy? It's only a fantasy now...

Google is changing its policy for storing your personal search information data:

Google to anonymize user data | The Register

All search sites do the same, MS doesn't state what and how long it holds data and AOL holds the your user information for two months. Its been a while since I read this so I hope I have the facts correct.

Not sure what they do with deleted email/talk messages, if they are ever really deleted. I doubt anyone other than the government could get it from google. If you're that worried you shouldn't be using IM or email.

Anyway, as to your problem, as dumb as this may sound - if you're that worried something your sending may be a problem if you're company gets it, don't use your work issued blackberry to send it. I wouldn't trust the IT Department and you don't know if that policy will every change. The beauty of the BB is it is a centrally managed device, the policy could change anytime and you'd never even know it. I have no idea what version of BES my company is running and no clue what it can and can't do.

Amending and expanding on my earlier post, the bottom line is "anything" you do online is tracked. Don't be misled by the double talk of EULA's and other statements to the contrary. Gathering personal information is big business, and it's all about the money.

Nothing to worry about, the horse is already out of the barn.....
