Default OTA patch from blackberry.com/dst2007 doesn't work

Woe to 7250s and other devices with 4.0.0 and 4.0.2 (and probably other 4.0.x versions).

They report the following error when trying to download DST patch from blackberry.com/dst2007:

http Error 406: Not Acceptable
The page you are trying to load is not supported by the browser. Please try loading a different page. [OK] [Details]

Details results:
200: application can not accept the content [text/vnd.sun.j2me.app descriptor]

Newer devices update via this method just fine.

Angry Device state unknown

Hi all, I have been using this forum for the past year and have yet to contribute, so here it goes.

Exchange 2003 SP2
BES 4.1.2 w/ MDS running
SQL BESMgmt database
350 users, 7290's, 7250's, 8700's

I was able to create the software configuration and succesfully push out to 1 handheld, I then noticed ever BES account I applied the SC too stated "Device State Unknown" under the [configuration] column.

This bothered me, so I contacted TSupport and after 3 hours on the phone and going through every step the answer was given "This is a known error, just wait 4-24 hours and the patch should apply, please disregard the Device State Unknown" as it is a known bug.

Needless to say this did not install confidence in me (TSupport never does), but I did wait and the patch did apply. After running the DST2007Query.exe I noticed that the patch I applied did install, but it was flagged with "awaiting update". It has been 6 hours, no dice.

I also noticed that some of my users (15) are flagged with "No Device Info". These users are communicating with the BES, but I cannot see their device info nor can I push the SC to these handhelds. These devices are all newer 7250's with 4.1.x HH code.

My first task will be to rerun Enterprise Activation on these devices, just to see if they will register with the BES, if not a wipe and activation might be in order.

Finally, has anyone experienced a lapsed delay with devices flagged with "Awaiting Patch"?

Any thoughts on what to do with the devices that have "No Device Info" flagged?

Sorry for the long post, its late, and I have been at this for 15 hours now....

Thanks

J

It is pushed to my handheld and is trying to get the patch, however it fails:

"patch not found: trying again at: <date/time>"

The MDS (running on besx 4.1.2) shows these HTTP errors:

My device tries to go to the following page: GET /DST2007/patches/0x20400430/4.1.0.256/1.8.0.143/patch.txt HTTP/1.1> on BlackBerry

It then receives a http 404 error (file does not exist) which is correct as I my desktop browser also reports a 404 error.

When I visit the site with my BlackBerry handheld manually, I get redirected to the correct patch. So it seems the patch manager is pointing to the incorrect URL on the BlackBerry site to download the patch.

Anybody seen this before? Any ideas?

EDIT: I opened up a case at RIM. Will report any updates.
RIM (support Canada) has fixed the issue. It was, like I thought, trying to get the patch from the invalid location. They fixed it now and the link now actually point to a COD file (http://www.blackberry.com/DST2007/pa....143/patch.txt)

Hope it helps anybody: if you experience this issue, turn on HTTP logging on MDS and find out which URL the patch manager is trying to access. Report this to RIM support and they will fix the issue.

Typically, devices which does not report back to the BES are BlackBerry's with pre v4.0 handheld software. In your case (v4.1) this should work. The only thing that helped me in these cases was to re-activate this users (which is a pain, but only 15 users seem to have this issue).

As long as there is no device info known on the BES for these devices, pushing apps or this patch is not going to work....

I have pushed patch on about 20 devices, works great. Is the version of the OS supposed to change? None of the 20 devices OS versions changed. I was just curious.

Oh and another thing, I just did a DSTQuery again, only two of the devices were successfully applied. But if I look at the status on each device, it says Patch successfully applied. What is with that?

Yeah that is not happening. I think something is wrong. I am calling RIM.

It appears that the patch makes the server unable to read certain info from the device. On each of the patched devices in our system the server is reporting "Device state unknown" under the "Configuration Status" column.

The devices that have been upgraded show (on the device) that the software version has not been changed, but the patch has been applied.

So the version info listed in the patch documentation shows which versions need the patch. I had assumed that the version of the device would be upgraded, but it isn't. Only the patch is applied.

I get the same thing. I pushed the update to 10 devices yesterday. The people who reported back that the patch is installed but DST2007Query says "Awaiting Patch". 1 or 2 comes back as "Applied". Handheld software are various version of 4.x. Nothing to narrow down what/why.

Ok on the phone with RIM atm. They said the OS version does not change. But I am still having issues with DST Query defying that patch is not installed, even though device says patch is installed.

I wouldn't recommend it.
When the device resets it can sit there with the hourglass spinning for ~15 minutes. If the user didn't initiate the restart, they may think that thier device is broken.

This may sound silly but I think I found the issue with the DSTQuery issue. I've reviewed the software installed on users with the "Awaiting Patch" status and they all have some version of "Texas Hold'em King" and "Texas Hold'em King 2".

The users with "Texas Hold'em King 2" version 2.3.0 came back fine.

I ran the patch manualy from the website to test that. DST Query is still showing Awaiting patch. RIM does not know what it is atm.

None of our users have Texas Hold'em.

I am having the same issue and I have waited 24 hours. Did they give any clue as to how long we need to wait?

pushed patches to 20+ devices last night on 2 different BES servers. All but 1 device came back successfully. An 8700 on 4.1.0.194. Have multiple devices that are the same and the patch applied successfully on them. This is the second device that I've got the error on so far. One 8700 and one 8703e. Get error:

Configuration Status: Device State invalid.
