Default How To Properly Charge A New BB ?

Please Login to Remove!

i have a new 9780 on the way....you can see some of my complaints in my last thread....one of my complaints was short battery life....

the guy at the store said i should have drained the battery completely before charging it for the first time....is this true?

i told him i plugged it in and charged it as soon as i opened the box and he said "you will permanently damage the battery" by doing that....meaning it will never hold as much power as it should again?....so i said WTF....why didnt you guys tell me that when i bought it?

he also said you should never plug it in unless its near drained....well i always used to plug mine in and keep it topped up with my old curve and always had good long battery power

is this guy full of it?

I'm no expert but Vodafone and RIM said that these phones have lithium batteries. And you can charge it as much as you want it won't overcharge. You ideally should keep it well chareged, and never let it run right down. I charge mine at night in my car and desk. Never had a problem.

The guy at the store is providing incorrect data for blackberry(Lithium-ion) batteries.

I fully disagree. Lithium-ion batteries should never be fully discharged like what was recommended for the older phone batteries. Here's the best way to get the most out of your battery: Maximum Battery Life - BlackBerryFAQ

You should NEVER let a LI battery get below 20%, especially on a regular basis as it can damage the battery and potentially the device itself.

I keep mine plugged in and topped up when I am in the office.

By the way, glad to hear you're giving the 9780 another chance. I really think you're going to love it.

to be honest i didnt have much of a choice....it was about a 3-4 hour process just to get them to exchange the phone....after that i was so pissed off i just wanted to get out of there....asking about changing to a torch would have probably been another 3 hour process and just too much hassle for my liking....no thanks....

PS....thanks for all the replies....i kinda thought he was wrong

5 minutes difference :p just teasing, but as Dub Dub said try not to let it get below 20% is a basic rule of thumb, if it does the odd time no need to sweat buckets, from what i understand the Lithium batteries never want to be run dry PERIOD. that is when people have booting and charging problems i find.

Sometimes I'm about ready to say never, ever trust what anyone tells you in the store, except I had good help when I bought my first BlackBerry, in a store, and I've had minimal contact with either stores or customer service since.

But geeze louise, when will this bad advice die? It's like there are a bunch of grandfathers all around whispering to the youngsters, Ya know, ya need to run those all the way down before you charge 'em. Ya know?

Store reps are only there to make the sale, they don't know a lot of the technical aspects of the devices, they will say anything to make the customer think, and make it look like they know what they are talking about, but in the end it is all the sale to them. the odd time and I mean odd time you will get a customer that does know a lot and inform correctly.

I guess everyone remembers Ni-Cads, and thinks these phones and other devices still have them.

BTW, the same is true for your laptop - keep it topped off and don't let it run out if you can help it.

I must admit, though, that I will run my laptop to 30-40% once in awhile.
