Default pdf viewer is worthless

Please Login to Remove!

Any pdfs that I get on my phone are opened by the default viewer, but you can't read them. If you zoom in the quality is so bad (everything is blurry) that you can't read anything. Is there something I have set wrong?

There is no additional setting.

Try BeamBerry, much better, although not free.

But what is the purpose of the pdf viewer. I can't imagine it being useful for anything.

Ya I've seen that pdf viewer. I would consider paying for it if it was a one time fee. But ther is no way I can do the subscription.

Depending on how the pdf was saved, you either get a blurry image (which seems to be your experience so far), or you get the actual text of the pdf. It all depends on how the sender created the pdf file.

I seem to remember having an "enhance" option in the memory when I used to look at pdf's. After upgrading to 4.5, however, I no longer see it in the menus. Maybe the option was removed or is this something that is available with BIS but not BES?

It automatically enhances now.
After you zoom... wait a few seconds for the additional data to load and the PDF will enhance itself.

Ya, I saw the enhance option in the menu, but it doesn't seem to change anything.

ok, i wasn't waiting long enough. But when you enhance, you can't scroll around the file, you can only see what you zoomed in too. At least I can somewhat read a pdf. Thanks.

This may not be helpful to you, but you can convert pdf's on your computer to be viewable on the BB with special software. If it's text data in the PDF and not image data, this method works quite well if you have reference docs that you want available on the go. It's a very readable, configurable user interface. The search feature in the software works quite well too.

It's called "mobipocket reader." There's a desktop library manager that you can drop PDF's onto to convert, and then you just right click on them and send them to your phone.

A shame to learn that the RIM PDF viewer is so awful. That was one of the reasons I was considering upgrading to the latest OS.

Yeah, this is great for reference documents. But I would like to be able to read pdf files I get in an email or download via a website.

I don't think you will be able to download a PDF from the browser.

To repeat, BeamBerry is a great option, Repligo is yet another.

Those are your choices of which I am aware.

Wirelessly posted

I view pdfs dozens of times daily on my bb. Both before and after 4.5. I'd advise viewing as text if the formattind isn't too far off. It works for me.

I am running 4.5.0.52 on an 8820

I have a pdf attached to an email that I am trying to view. I want to save the attachment, delete the original email, and be able to access the pdf whenever I want to. I went to Media so I could browse/access files, and I attempted to open the file. It then give me an "Unable to open file type"

Is there anyway to open pdf's after saving them? or you can only do it by going through the original message?

You can do as you describe with BeamBerry, on a PDF.
You cannot in the native BB OS.

I was also kind of hoping for an improvement in native PDF viewing with 4.5. I also thought that the native PDF viewer used to be able to rotate PDF files.

I'll have to check out that view as text option... sounds like a great alternative.

It seems also Docs to Go doesn't help (ie. can't open PDF's).

Cerience is developing a native PDF viewer. You can try out the beta by signing up here: RepliGo Reader for BlackBerry - Native PDF Viewing - Beta

I had a 3 month subscription to Repligo and found it a great program but figured that with 4.5 it would be totally redundent and didn't renew.

How can RepliGo possibly be a native reader unless its built into the OS by RIM itself?
