I get it! I thought a data plan was set at a fixed cost. So now I understand that you get the least expensive data plan and then use wifi to minimize your air time.

When you use the GPS app, does the BIS send the maps and location information to you or can you install maps on a media card? I am assuming that a data plan would not be required to access GPS coordinates, but a data plan would be needed for the BIS to interpret the coordinates.

Thanks!

You would be well advised to start doing some real research before getting yourself into something.

The data plans with AT&T (as with many carriers) are a set price for a set amount of data. (Not "air time".) For example, you might get 300MB for $20 and 3GB for $30. If you go over the set data limit, your carrier will typically charge you a fee.

As noted above, when you use data over WiFi, that data typically doesn't "count" against your data limit.

GPS apps and maps are two different things, so be careful not to confuse the two.

Obtaining a GPS signal and the coordinates does not require data. However, map applications do require a data connection.

They are very few options to "install maps on a media card".

Carriers make a lot of money with the consumer cofusion. Take Motorcycle Mama's advice and do a lot of research first.

Thanks tsac and MM.

Some options aren't available (such as Internet email, and disabling the password requirement) because the 9300 is setup as an enterprise BB. A friend is bringing a USB cable by later today so I can use a little utility to remove the IT policy. (The 8310 uses a different connector than the 9300).

I'll review the data plans before selecting one. Difficult part of that is in knowing how much data I might end up using. I need to find an app that uses media card maps to use with GPS.

Thanks for the support,
Frank

If you are only seeing the "Enterprise Email" setup option, that is likely not due to an IT Policy but is reflective of the fact that you do not have a BlackBerry Data Plan.

There may be an IT Policy on the device, but that's not why you are seeing only that option.

OH!

Darn. I figured removing the IT policy would fix the features. Of course, I now understand that without a data plan, I won't be able to do email anyway. While I wait for the data cable to arrive, I am looking into GPS apps that might be able to use locally stored maps.

Thanks!

There are no GPS mapping apps that store data locally.

Look at TrekBuddy and GMaps Mobile. But you will find that the coverage may be limited.

Thank you for the guidance. The friend with the cable hasn't shown yet. So I still can't see what happens once the IT Policy is removed.

Hello all.

I finally got a cable for the Curve 9300 and used the jl Commander to reset to factory defaults. I now have the option to enable/disable password.

I've read several threads that mention accessing Options-Advanced. My 9300 Curve lists 9 different items under Options, but an "Advanced" is not listed. Perhaps the more recent firmware eliminated "Advanced"?

Thanks.
