Did not think a OS upgrade would fix that. phone is only a few months old (refurb with no warranty) found out today from the user that had it.

I''m a BES admin as well running 4.1.4 on four servers two separte domains. I had one 8700 device to test with, but I needed another one for the other domain. So, when I do maintenance and need to ensure message traffic actually reaches the devices.
1. If your company has a BES they can afford, a blackberry, and data plan
2. You need a test device to ensure the BES is always up and functional
3. You need it to walk customers through their issues.
4. You need it to test the new software as it comes out for the devices
5. You need it to test it if you have BT implemented
6. But most of all, you need one to ensure the integrity of your server is 100% functional. If they can see that, then they are a bunch of butts!!!

lol, it must be a London thing, coz I do exactly the same.
Only downside to having a BB is that the CEO is totally unaware/does not care about time zones. He will call me from Canada with a minor issue ("my BB hooked up to Rogers, I prefer blah network" - which I get annoyed at because at the end of the day IT IS WORKING so there is not a reason to call me), and it will be 2AM in the UK. Thus why my BB now lives on mute - have to draw a line somewhere in the CEO's fantasy world of "Jadey loves 24 hour support"

I almost never answer my calls on the weekend, and put the device on mute overnight. I rarely get calls, but when I do on the weekend I try to screen them via voice mail. If it's something that can wait till monday, it waits till monday. If something is seriously wrong, I'll call back.

Yup, same here. I was maintaining a BES Express for 4 users but recently we've nearly tripled our headcount to 12 (and upgraded to BES Professional) so my boss knew the request for mine was coming down the line
Seriously though; once it becomes expected that there is near-zero downtime on communication, you really have no choice but to have your own unit (or at least easy access to one) for testing and maintenance purposes.
Also, if you are maintaining other systems, it really does free you up to move around and be away from your desk/mail client while being in the office. I'm contemplating changing my voicemail to say "I won't be answering voice messages; email me if you need help"

Snap - I do tend to ignore the voicemail light on my desk phone! Most of my users have worked out the quickest way to get a response is via email.
I don't like interfacing with users

I don't mind talking to users generally; I just find that if they take the minute to write down their issues, it's far easier to diagnose rather than listening to a long drawn out voicemail...

I have a help section for Outlook in publicfolders, they never use it. I am not creating one for BB anytime soon. I just ask, "Did you RTFM?". If they say yes, I tell them to ask my boss since he has a BB.

No BlackBerry here. Boss said no, but we're getting one for the helpdesk so they can support the handhelds. In fact, I don't think I've ever held one in my hands.

I only get to hold them for a little bit to activate them or wipe them manually.
We have 58 data plans now but I still dont get one.
I hope when I go camping, they need something important that could of been done with it.

You can have mine. I am thoroughly annoyed with mine at the moment - well no, I am never annoyed with my actual BB, more the fact that two of my US users decided to call all of Friday evening interrupting my poker night (they never seem to remember that Denver is 7 hours behind UK time!). I was still fielding calls at 00.40 UK time, at which point I was fairly annoyed paired with very drunk, so turned off the device and ignored them all. I thought that was a safer option that inebriated tech support.
Especially when I received the email below - and no, it is not edited. I gave the guy an EA password three days before on Tuesday, telling him it was valid for 48 hours. He seemed to wait for me to go home on Friday, then try and activate.
This really was sent to me. Thus why I resisted replying, I'd be out of a job now otherwise

Re: ?
I'm still here for 3 more hours. I am trying again and leaving it next to the window. Darick said that's what he usually did.
---------------------------------------
Then an hour later he sent me:
Even by the window, it stopped activating and said that it lost connection with the server...any ideas?
"Stop being a f&%$wit" was my initial idea.
I never heard of a window fixing an expired EA password. He spent over three hours trying that "fix"
ARGH

There is also #6: Your boss does not allow you to have the latest model for the other 5 mentioned reasons.
A portion of my user base is getting Bolds as soon as it comes out. Guess who has to supported them? I have a 8310, but it took me some time to finally get one. Now with the 9000 it starts all over again.
I'm happy with my 8310 but for all those specific questions I need a specific device.

Simulators is one thing which really helps and I do use them. But it does not(!) compare to having it for real and using it daily. I do not need it constantly. Just to play with it for a week is more than adequate.
