Default Gmail app 1.5 out!

Please Login to Remove!

Hey folks

I just discovered that Google released Gmail app 1.5 for BlackBerry!

It now supports notification on new mail (just perfectly implemented, Gmail gets its own entry in the Profile menu) among other cool stuff such as full access to your Gmail contacts and the spam folder.

I hope this has not been posted yet several times .

Good find! Just installed it and it works great. Nice incremental improvement over the last release. The Contacts function is a nice add.

Well it works great provided you are not using a Google hosted domain.

The program doesn't work with hosted domains. Boo!

Good to know. I was debating whether to move to Hosted Domain. Looks like another reason not to bother :(

FYI: By default it appends "Sent from Gmail for mobile" to your emails. You can disable it in settings. Don't know if this was in the last version as I never send from the app.

There's a different app that does work with hosted domains - lemme see if I can find that link...

Yeah I have the older app that works with the hosted domains, but I don't think it has the newer features of this ver. 1.5.1 does it?

Default Issue: LED keeps flashing

I just noticed an issue with the new notification feature:

When I get a new mail, the LED of my BB 8700 keeps flashing forever (i.e. until I hard reset it). Neither opening nor deleting the new message makes it go away.

Can anyone confirm this? It's not a huge issue of course as you can just turn LED flashing off but it's still a pitty not to have it as I really like being able to have visual feedback upon receiving messages.

Update:
Sorry, I lied. The flashing stops after some 5 minutes' time. This behavior took me by surprise because with SMS (as well as calendar events and to-do tasks), the LED goes out immediately after all new messages are read.

Can someone please explain to me why you'd use this instead of BIS?
I don't buy the keep emails separate thing. What else is there?

The only reason I use this is I have my BB set to delete email older than 30 days. If I Need access to a message that is older than that, I use the GMail app.

Otherwise, I don't ever bother with it.

When BIS is down (rare) it's nice to use this app so you don't miss anything.

Does this display html emails that BIS would otherwise have a hard time with?

Upgraded to the new version but it will not run. Previous version worked fine on my Sprint 8130 (didn't have to change any permissions or anything).

This one is giving me the error "Network Unavailable. This program requires a data connection, and some Blackberry devices require reconfiguration to work properly...."

I have coverage and 1XEV.

I do not think they could do HTML emails yet.

However, I believe they added the new mail notification in the profile.

The new version (for Google apps, not "regular" GMail) is not working for me either. It just hangs at "loading" in my inbox, but nothing ever loads and nothing appears to be happening (no data arrows).
