I'm currently on my second BB Bold, under warranty exchange, after spending a weekend on the phone w/ AT&T and RIM when (initially) my Bold on BIS couldn't connect to BIS at all unless on Wi-Fi (claim: hardware problem, even though I was getting full bars 3G w/ a berry cluster...then after a "master reset", not even having an option to enable anything but BES).

As part of my new paranoia (or "once bitten" syndrome), I've been closely monitoring what my Bold has been doing wirelessly, often leaving WiFi off whenever possible so that I immediately know if the problem reappears. Turning on Wi-Fi, and checking "services status" (Manage Connections -> Services Status), I end up seeing:

• BlackBerry Internet Service Connection: Wi-Fi
• BlackBerry Enterprise Server Connection: Wi-Fi

whenever I get actively connected to Wi-Fi. When Wi-Fi is disabled, I see:

• BlackBerry Internet Service Connection: Mobile Network
• BlackBerry Enterprise Server Connection: not connected

Now, AFAIK, this device has never, in the week it's been in my possession, been even connected to a machine with a BES-infected DM install. I can't say for certain before that, as I have no clue if AT&T Warranty Exchange centers exchange with new devices or not (though I'll be curious to find out), but as I only have BIS for my phone, what I'd like to know is:

Why does the Bold claim that it's connected to a BES, but only when Wi-Fi is enabled? Is this harmless? Is there a way to stop this from happening? Could this be a refurb that was previously BES-infected?

Other relevant info: v4.6.0.167 (platform 4.0.0.157) (ie, stock AT&T OS), what I assume are relevant service books:

• Provisioning [PROVISIONING] UID: BESPRV-NA (errr??)
• Blackberry Internet Browsing Service [BrowserConfig] UID: GPMDSNA01
• IPPP for BIBS [IPPP] UID: GPMDSNA01
• Provisioning [OTASL] UID: OTAGMENA01

that first Provisioning one is giving me pause, now that I notice it... Am I just now being ultra-paranoid at this point? Is any other information needed to diagnose this or offer suggestions?

Dose the Blackberry report an IT Policy?

Options -> Security Options -> General Settings

If you have been connected to a BES you should see an IT Policy name, and below that under Services Something like:
Desktop [Snnnnnnnnn] (AES)

Where n is a digit.

You would also see a bunch of Service Books that start with Desktop

Nope, only Content Compression/Protection/Strength/Include Contacts, with no services listed.

No service books starting with "Desktop" either. So why in the world would it be claiming to be connected to BES when on Wi-Fi?!

I wouldn't worry unless you have an IT policy or Desktop (BES) service books.

Without the necessary service books you can't be connected to a BES. If you don't have a BES data plan it's completely moot anyway as that will prevent BES connectivity.
