Lookups on the BlackBerry devices are pointing to the first/last name field in AD. However, users on the BES are listed by their display name in AD. In many cases a user’s first name may be listed differently between these 2 AD fields. For example, in AD a user is listed as Charles in the first name field (BB lookup), but everyone knows him as Mike, which is listed in the display name field (BES listing).

To avoid confusion is there a way to change the lookup field so instead of pointing to the first name field it points to the display name field in AD? We are running BES 5.0 in an Exchange 2007 environment with a remote SQL 2005 DB. Is this something that can even be changed or adjusted on the BES?

I've looked at most of the BES 5.0 documentation, and BAS tabs. Can't find any configuration settings to modify.

Anyone know for certain?

Thanks for the reply. It just dosent make sence for the handheld to point to the name field and the BES points to the display name unless its assumed the 2 are the same for all users accross the board.

Interestingly enough, the display name does appear in the "hover pop-up" that appears when you pause over names returned by the lookup . Makes even less sense now..

Maybe RIM would consider making the Lookup "Display" values configurable for BES Admins! For example, not only let us decide the name format that appears, but also letting us change the company name field to show location. For a corporate device... where most of the employees work for the same company, it isn't very helpful to see the same company name beside every entry in your lookup result set. So I think would be very convenient to allow us to choose what to information we want to display. So if we search for "Smith"... we see all the Smiths and, perhaps, their office locations, or Job Titles, basically some other value to help the user quickly pick the right Smith. Sure, you can hover over every name and get some additional info... But that's only name and email address.

I know it's just crazy talk! But it would make a lot of my users very happy.

Heres a responce I got back from RIM on this issue. did some research and it appears that itxxx8217;s more a function of how the address look up is done via the mapi session that makes it impossible to change how we do the look up. The only option you would have is to configure LDAP look up instead of the GAL look up but even then you need to setup a custom registry key to search by display name. This is possible but we do not have the registry key to offer to make that possible.
