Default UMA and EDGE: Significance of Upper Case/Lower Case?

Please Login to Remove!

I am curious to know the significance of the "UMA" and "EDGE" indications regarding their appearance as upper-case or lower-case letters. My forum search hasn't turned up an answer to this.

Can anyone explain what it means when the letters are in upper or lower case?

Thank you!

UPPER CASE = CONNECTED
lower case = not connected

EDGE /= edge
EDGE > edge
EDGE is good
edge is bad

(same applies for GPRS, UMA, 1XEV and other networks)

Doesn't no signal mean not connected?

There are instances where you can have voice but no data ... the lower case network connection (edge, uma, gprs, 1xev) all indicate that you have no (or extremely poor) data connectivity. It could be a data outage, or other problem, as well.

Quote:

Here's a partial breakdown of what you can generally do under some of the different coverage indicators:

EDGE: Can use the phone, send and receive email, PINs, SMS texts, and MMS messages, and use the browser with a high-speed data connection.

GPRS: Can use the phone, send and receive emails, PINs, SMS texts, and MMS messages, and use the browser.

edge/gprs/GSM: Can use the phone, send and receive SMS texts and MMS messages.

SOS: Only emergency calls (dialing '112' will connect you to any existing carrier coverage to complete the call if you're outside your own carrier's coverage area).

I thought all lower case meant that you were not connected to the BB server??? Because on my 8320, with edge I can still hit the net, but won't receive emails... With EDGE I get everything....

I believe capitalized UMA or EDGE mean you're connected to certain type of BB-related server.

Before I asked TMO to send me "BB Feature Enabler"- a free option for BB owners, they were always lower cased but I could still surf the web through WiFi or EDGE network. After the BB features were enabled, they turned upper cased and I started able to run applications like Google Mail or Google Maps. Oh, it's also when I started to see images in MMS messages.

UMA vs uma have the same meaning as EDGE vs edge, ecept you are communicating with youe phone company via IP instead of a cell tower. If you have a Tmo, see your reference guide that came in the box with the phone. Pg21 for the curve.

is UMA only on TMO phones? Ex. I had a curve from TMO but when I went to Europe my friend thought it would be cool to throw me in his pool so i got non TMO curve unlocked it etc.... now i only see EDGE, GPRS but no UMA.

reason for this?

thank you,
Tom

UMA requires phone (WiFi) and providers (UMA server) components.

Tmo's native curve is an 8320 and has the WiFi option. Check "Options" -> "About" to see which model you have.

There are other providers that ship and support the 8320's features such as Orange Romania. However other providers (ATT, Sprint) may offer the 8310 or 8330 instead which are GPS equiped instead of WiFi equipped and as such do not support UMA.
