Why people still use BlackBerrys - CNN.com

I dont know who those "handful" of users were that they interviewed, but I find their top 3 points as to why folks keep BlackBerrys to be rather dubious.

It turns out, according to a handful of interviews with BlackBerry users, there are three basic reasons: People are addicted to the click-clacking keyboard; they love the blinking red light on the top, which alerts users to new messages; and many just happen to have the phone because it's required for work.

Really?! The blinking red light is a reason?

How about unparalleled email handling?
How about reliability?
How about security?
How about unique features like BBM?

And they find some douchebag who says the blinking red light is teh win?! I much prefer the section of the article when the writer said,
"Businesspeople also say BlackBerrys are just good for productivity." Finally, something that makes sense!

I too loved the reliability of the Bold 9700 when I got it last November. There was nothing like it. I mean, the first one had to returned because the screen was loose and the phone wasn't getting a data connection, but no biggie. I kept the second one until the end of December and there were only two or three outages during that time.

I love the reception too...when it had a connection it always kept the conversation going until it dropped...I never had any doubt that I would be able to get across most of my point to anyone during a discussion.

Ok, so the BlackBerry is nowhere near perfect. But for some things is bests every other mobile device on the market (when it works, of course). While I certainly prefer the email interface of certain other smartphones, the speed of BlackBerry email is not quite matched, even though others are starting to get close. While the browser is not flashy it usually gets the job done quickly which is really all I need it to do. The battery life on phones like the 9700 is phenomenal. Even on 3G it lasted through more emailing, web browsing, texting, as well as other use that any other smartphone aside from the Nokia E72 I was also using.

Why did I buy a BlackBerry? Reliability. Why don't I use a BlackBerry anymore? Reliability.

Will I come back? Sure, I think about buying another 9700 all the time, right up until I have to help someone fix a problem with their BB...I guess I'm not really so sure after all.

That's what got me off the Treo bandwagon into the BlackBerry parade. When email and other messaging is misision-critical, nothing else will do.

Reliability?? Red Led Blinking??

I Hate to see the red blinking light!!!! It shows that my mobile is dead!!
All this after 3 weeks of purchase. I read that its software problem and i have to reload but the pc cannot dedect my BB. If anyone can help, much appriciated. Thanks

Perhaps you would care to start a new thread and let us know what seems to be wrong with your device?

Then we could point you in the right direction.

I use the BB because it meets my needs works well. Don't particularly care for the flash of the iPhone great device awesome but I just don't use it in a way for it to be practical for me

If you can't get on with touch-screen handsets which lamentably seem to be increasing (and I certainly can't abide them) a BlackBerry is unrivalled for it's versatility in such a small, well-built device.

1) Solid user communities (like BBF)
2) Durability (dropped more times than I can remember and it still works)
3) It just works (Everything is easy and simple to use - granted when I first got it I found it annoying, but it's grown on me and I wouldn't have it any other way)
4) It rarely, if ever, crashes
5) Email security - with a SSL connection to the IMAP server, I don't think anyone is going to get access to my email any time soon

There is one point I would dispute though - when it comes to "email reliability" - we have had BIS outages in the past. With a straight email client that has IMAP-IDLE compatability (i.e. iphone), there is one rare advantage which is it's not dependent on any other server other than your mail provider - obviously there are downsides, but there are days I wish that BB"s would have a purpose built native email client that doesn't rely on RIM servers - note the keyword is 'native' - not some 3rd party app which doesn't work as well.

But like I said, pros and cons to that.

For me, it's the basics: being able to set a different alert sound for each email address, contact, messages, etc. The ability to copy/paste between different apps, the way it can turn itself on and off at designated times, the fact that you can save images you find online, the ease with which playlists can be created and edited.

What good are an eight megapixel camera and glut of apps if you don't have the basics?

3 Great things that Blackberrys have but Androids and iPhones don't:

1. BBM
2. Sexy flashing red light
3. Click-clacking keyboard

This means Blackberrys are better
