Should I start a free blackberry downloading site?
Please Login to Remove!
Helloo,
I run a hosting company, so i have a few servers, i was thinking that i should start a small blackberry website, because all the one i have come across are not that good, it would be cool to have a site that has all free software listed and themes etc etc?
Please reply with your thoughts?
and if anyone wants to help me aswell? but thats after i have read your thoughts - then il make my decision if i should do this or not.

I'm sure if you did so, and got any necessary permissions from the SW authors, that people would make use of it. "Free" usually attracts a crowd...

What exactly are you going to be offering on this site? Is it downloads or links to people who have downloads?

sounds like you just want to leach themes from sites to generate advertising traffic. if you do this and i find ANY of the themes from my site, you will be sued. i did not pay good money to purchase forum software and utilities for someone else to steal copyrighted material to repost.
be original..learn themebuilder...build your OWN themes...then start your site...
this is why i will only post ota links!

Sounds like you just want to make an advertising portal to generate some revenue without really doing anything.
I really don't see how this is more helpful than the numerous forums and blog sites who provide this along with their own content and services.

This was an unnecessary jump to a negative conclusion.
These forums are supposed to be about helping, educating, and sharing information. You should have asked a couple of questions before jumping at his throat and threatening to sue, and your concerns could have been stated in a much more positive manner...not what I would call good customer relations for your own site, one I'm not likely to visit again after this display.

I think the reaction was appropriate. The OP specifically said that this site would offer direct download links, which is a violation of copyright.
While suing would not be the best course (it would be a DMCA violation filing) the sentiment is appropriate. The OP has no right to distribute it without permission.

while my reply may not have been laced with compliments (why should it?)...
I'm just getting tired of people putting up websites to "promote" themes that (1) they did not author and (2) they post the files from their site (see blackberryfreaks.com) - and do not give credit to the author nor the website it came from.
As a website owner/theme designer, sites that basically leach from legitimate sites really irritate me. The ONLY reason for a site to do that is to generate some type of revenue from advertising. Why else would a person put together a referral site? Out of the goodness of their heart? nope..$$$$$
I have spent a large sum of money putting together my site, and please forgive me if I come accross a little rude when I hear that people want to throw a site together to leach...
As far as you not visiting, that is your porogative. I am only trying to maintain the integrity of my site and anyone else that is in the same boat that I am in.
Customer/member relation is our number 1 priority at Themes4BB.com. We treat each member with the highest level of courtesy and respect. We just ask that the membership do the same.
I guess it would be different if you actually were in my shoes.
Put together a website with original content...have another site that is on a free host post the themes and drive traffic away from your own site..see how you like it.
Thank you Peter for backing me up on this. I really appreciate it.

I don't agree...IMHO, you guys dumped on him unnecessarily hard...made assumptions of ill intent, didn't try to educate or inform him in a friendly (or at least even-handed) way of your concerns and the limits he'd need to observe to not run afoul.
Being "right" about a general point (i.e., stealing someone else's content is bad) doesn't mean you should assume others are planning to do so and threaten to sue them at your first hello. Your post was, and this is my opinion obviously, over the top in this case.
We'll have to agree to disagree.
And I should note that I have run a business in the past, and have dealt with unethical business practices from competitors. So I've been exactly in your shoes (to the tune of $500K to $1M contracts), and have been able to get through that w/out feeling like I need to jump on anyone who may in my mind remotely resemble the people who tried to screw me out of my business in the past.
No offense intended, truly. I'll allow you the last word, and won't post again on this.

I get what you want to do, and go for it. Forget themes, there are already millions of themes sites out there, but there isn't one truly good and reliable place to download BB software, with ratings, reviews, and screenshots.
The problem with BB is that since it is "business" phone/device, all the developers think the "business" owners will pay up to get something that they need. They feel since mostly business users own blackberry, they use it as a tool that helps them with their profit. This results in lack of freeware, or enough trial-ware. You will have hard time compiling a list of stuff to download.
Windows Mobile is far superior when it comes to customization with number of free applications. BB is just not there yet. Look at it, you can't even find a decent free mp3 application or video viewer.
BB API needs to be more flexible!

There was no jumping to conclusions. I asked the question, and here's the result:
