Just curious, want to use my Blackberry for personal use for other e mail programs and browsing. I know on computer they can trace and monitor activities. Can this be done on a blackberry? Advice appreciated, thanks

Don't assume anything is private on a company BES-connected Blackberry -- regardless of how the data or email is delivered to the device. For example, PIN's do not travel via BES/MDS at all yet BES admins can pull PIN messages (see E-Commerce News: Legal: Is Your Boss Monitoring Your BlackBerry?).

If it's private keep it off the company BB.

I have already asked this and in fact I think I know the answer, but what about if I have my BB tethered to my computer? Can my employer see what I am browsing online? Thanks in advance...

If you think you might be doing something that will get you in trouble, better to not do it. Use your home computer for whatever you don't want your employer to question. Or fire you for doing.

That is what I've always assumed, but don't get me wrong, I wasn't really planning on doing anything that would get me terminated. I just was curious to know if my employer knew that I came on forums like this one, and if they knew about my blog. (The blog is the one thing that I would like them never to read)

i am BES admin at work, check this out:
there is a log of every phone call you make or recieve, and if you have a name associated with that number it will show up on the log too...

Hello. I have my own personal BB.
At the moment, I have my personal Yahoo Mail arriving through Vodafone UK BIS.
I also have personal phone calls, made from and received to my BB.
I also have personal SMS/Text messages arrive though the Vodafone Network.


My company would like me to connect my personal BB to the company BES.

If I agree to this, what can I lose?

Can the company read my Yahoo Mail arriving through the BIS?

Can the company have a log of my personal phone calls?
(reading the above post, the answer appears to be "Yes")

Can the company have a log of my personal SMS/Text Messages?

In lieu of the answers to the above 3 questions, are there any counter-measures I can take?

Also can you direct me to some info, where I can read up some more about this issue.

Not only that, you will most likely lose control of your device when the BES rules are applied. Meaning you, most likely, won't be able to add/remove software on the device, or modify it/change settings in the way you can now under BIS.

thats a fairly obvious question, considering the topic; its easier on the it admin. not only that if you are receiving company email to a wireless device the admin can claim security issues

I disagree. How is him receiving company email on his personal BB that is not connected to a BES any different than me checking my company email from my home PC via Outlook Web Client? Would the company then force me to have my home computer on their network? I don't think so.

i havn't worked in a place yet were i could use outlook to retrieve company email as i could on my blackberry usually in this case if your not on the BES you are using the redirector. checking it though a web portal is a little different and a little more secure, deeming what you are doing though the web is connecting to the company's network in a sense. now if you were getting company email though outlook on your computer this would be more of the person equipment issue that i was talking about.

but if you look i did say claim issues, not that there would actually be any. i have meet quit a few lazy IT people, who will say anything to make there jobs easier

Yes, in addition to the PhoneLog there is a SMSLog file created, one of the fields is "body".
