Default Flying

I will be travelling soon I am confused about this.I know when you get on the plane they tell you to turn you cell phone off until the seatbelt sign is gone.
With the Blackberry I read you should put it on Airplane mode;can't find this on my Curve 8330.
If I turn it Off for the entire flight(5 hours)I can't use it at all to play games.
Is this right? Is my best bet to turn it off and make sure it won't turn on until I am back on the ground.I am flying with Air Canada.
Thanks,
Rita

There is not a function "Airplane Mode" but this is what you need to do:

Before the aircraft door closes, Go to Manage Connections and turn OFF the mobile network. Your signal indicator on the screen should read OFF. Then power off the device.

When you are in the air, and instructed to do so, you can turn on the BB, and the signal will be off.

As a frequent flyer (Star Alliance Gold for more years than I care to mention) I would also advise checking with the Flight Attendant to validate if you need to turn off your Bluetooth connection as well.

You can disable this from the same area.

I've read posts from pilots that say they have personally tested this and found that cell signals do indeed show up on the instrumentation. Bottom line, if you're thousands of feet in the air, and to hit the ground prematurely means sure death, why risk it, unless we are finally told unequivocally that it is safe to do? If you end up wrong, you end up DEAD wrong.

So you want to get us all killed by interfering with the aircraft avionics? Thanks!

Inv. Banker huh? That makes sense.

I had a friend who did some private flying. Although he said it didn't totally block anything out you could definately tell if their was a cell phone/blackberry on. Just to be safe always turn the wireless off. I've only had one airline that made me completely power the device down. Most are ok with you leaving the device on and just turning the wireless off. If they ask you to completely power it down then do so. It isn't worth getting kicked off your flight.

sage, just do as I mentioned above and you will be fine.

There are some airlines (Europe I think) that are moving away from the requirement. But as long as the el capitan says turn it off... turn it off. Then turn it on when allowed.

You especially want to turn off Mobile Network with a CDMA device on a long flight. It will drain your battery much faster than a GSM device.

Just my personal experience.

You have to turn it off, regardless of GSM/CDMA.

Turn your cell off during take off and landing.
You need to hear the potentially life-saving preflight instructions
Cell broadcasts do cause interference in radio equipment
Cell phone conversations can bleed into flight crew headsets
Cell phones and Laptops are dangerous projectiles
