So I have a pretty strong box at home that I want to re-format and install M$ Server and Exchange Server and BES. Will I need my own domain to point the mail mx records to my box or can I use a Yahoo account and "Exchange" it?

You will need a mail server such as Exchange, Domino, or Groupwise.

I would recommend you read over the BES documentation to get a better understanding of BES and what is needed. Check the KB articles at Blackberry.com

I can see Exchange pulling Pop3 e-mail and storing it on another domain for the BES to connect to, but I can't see sending e-mail from yahoo through the BES.

Easy answer, No.

BES is designed to work only with MAPI, not a POP setup. Seeing as you're Yahoo is not hosted by you as well this will not make it any easier.

Here is how BES works for Exchange:

1. Email arrives on Exchange
2. Exchange sends a UDP packet to BES to notify it of new mail
3. BES checks global and user filters then the email is encrypted and compressed and forwared to the BB

It's the reverse order when sending from the BB.

Seeing as you are not familiar with BES so much and you will do be doing a completely unsupported config I would save yourself an others some headaches and just use the BIS solution.

Also, yes you need a domain as well and some ISP's do not allow traffic on port 25, meaning you need to mess with mx records to direct the smtp traffic to another port.

It won't be worth you're trouble, believe me.

Why not just creat an account at mail2web.com, forward your Yahoo mail there and use their blackberry option to send to your BB. I am using it to send to a Windows Mobile, apologies for the language, device and it works very well.

Not sure about the BB but WM is free.

So you wanna go through all this to achive what that you can't right now? So you can use your yahoo email on BB? Don't you think it might be very extreme and expensive way just to be able to do that?
Based on your question I don't think you should be doing that.

I would use a GMail solution with Google Sync and Calendar. You've got nearly 60% of the BES solution (as far as PIM sync goes, anyway) - - mail/calendar/contacts.

You can configure Gmail to receive Yahoo mail, but sending out as Yahoo might not be as easy, at least from what I know.
