Since the Bold2's antenna is internal, I don't see how it could have the same problem (i.e. short two parts of the antenna with your fingers)

It's not. Completely apples (pardon pun) and oranges comparison. If the RF is marginal and the BER (Bit Error rate) is at the threshold putting your hand over the antenna area will bring it over the edge. Not the same as bridging the external antenna of the iPhone. It's a corner case exercise in fault injection.

I would hope RIM's in-house attorneys were watching the "event". I would expect RIM to be not very happy with the analogy.

I've been trying like hell to replicate this since I heard that Jobs was 'Berry bashing and I honestly can't get my phone to drop any bars no matter how I hold it. I'm on T-Mobile (1900MHz EDGE 1700/2100MHz 3G) and I have also tried it with the wifi. Just wondering if anyone here has been able to replicate the "death grip" on the 9700.

my 9000 used to get better signal holding it upside down...because the antenna was at the bottom; but only by one bar from 2 to 3.

Doing everything short of shoving my 9700 up my a$$ it does not loose bars.

Look what AT$T and Bold 2 did it for me:
1. On day one receiving the phone, completely dropped 1 night phonecall from my company on product urgent issues!
2. On day three, I call my phone with my wife's phone side by side, no ring!
3. A week later, dropped another 2 important call from my manager!
4. Yesterday, in two long phone calls, both cut me off in the middle of conversation, redial has no problem.
The f**king AT$T phone just constantly switching between 3G and EDGE! It's a piece of junk. STEVE, you are as pig head as I to tie with AT$T!

If talking about recall or reimbursement, AT$T should reimburse my minutes charge and part of my 3G data charge!

i have an att 9700 which i have had since nov .in all that time i have had 2 dropped calls .my 3g is excellent .i have had a great time with this phone.no problems at all.and i have done every grasp on my 9700 and there is no change in my signal.

I'm completely pissed off by ATT and this crapberry phone!
It cut me off again in the middle of a customer service conversation, when I look back at the phone, EDGE again!
So whenever I'm not using BIS, I'd better switch to 2G only... to keep me connected to the world...!
Is there any shortcut to do this switch on a daily or hourly basis???

I made a thread a few months back about how I can block signals with my hand on the 9700. At work, I only get marginal signal, one to two bars. When the signal is that low, when I hold the phone in my left hand (even typing with both thumbs) the signal cuts out completely. Almost as soon as I release my left hand, the signal comes back

I've had my 9700 for a while now, too. Have grabbed all over the phone and can't make it lose bars. The worst time I have is in my house. In the very front of the living room I'll go to 1 or 2 bars. If I walk to the middle of the room bounces right back up. Front of the living room....only place I have trouble. Had the same problem with a Nokia and a Samsung. But I've never had a dropped call with the 9700, had them all the time with a Samsung. Nokia was always good too.

I think thats what Apple is trying stop no matter the cost. I think using other phones as an analogy is borderline desperate. The iPhone 4 is a great phone but I think damage has already been done and Apple knows this. Apple explaining the issues is great, but they need to distract people from this problem, too bad they don't have anything till September.

i have a 9700 and it cant get reception in my home at all only on WI-FI and i just unlocked a 9530 ad gets reception everywhere. I landscape and i loose reception (in seven hills ohio) in my bold all day i wont get rid of because of the screen and i just love it (besides got 2 9530 for an i pod 1st gen 16 gig off of CL) and i hate the reception does anyone know if they (RIM) ARE GOING to do anything about it

As much as I love my 9700 I can say that
1) It is unable to downgrade to under 3G when there is no 3G or 3G signal is gone, so I get no service at all (I have the network set-up as 3G&2G).

2) Multiple time shows all bars while in 3G and I go a "Failed" call message across the screen.

Is the same antena issue than iPhone or is the same carrier issue than iPhone. I always use a case for the phone and the signal is more stable than when I take the case out. Is this an antena issue? Perhaps all carriers and all phone manufacturers should say the same thing than Apple: we are not perfect. With the exception of RIM, no other manufacturer strongly denied the allegation of issues with their antenna design. Why RIM, why I love your phones but they are not perfect...
