will blackberry maps work on my verizon 8330. I say this because ive heard that gps doesnt work except for vz navigator. If bb maps doesnt work on it, are there any apps i can download besides vz navigator that will work?

Any GPS application will work on VZW, IF you first subscribe to VZW Navigator. if you don't, no GPS applications will work.

That wasn't my experience. I subscribed to VZW Navigator but still couldn't get Google Maps to use the GPS.

I gotta say...broken record...but it REALLY tweaks my nose hairs that VZW has locked down the GPS. I have a company issued Curve so I can't simply add VZW Navigator. But I don't even LIKE VZW Navigator. If you aren't in an area with reception you can't use it. And when I've needed it most it seems is when it hasn't worked correctly (errors, etc.) Just give me the damn GPS chip access so I can use MY choice of software. I promise, I won't call you for tech support if I can't figure it out. This is a very serious ding. I do not like being forced to use proprietary software that I don't even like. And in my case, I couldn't get it even if I DID want it.

I think you will need a GPS puck to mak the non VZW Navigator apps work. You need a GPS datafeed and that is the only other way to get it on Verizon.

With AT&T I can use GPS with Google Maps and it seems to work well.....are there any other free map applications that the GPS will work with??

I haven't been able to get gmaps to track my location with gps on my att 8310. It only uses that my location garbage and it still won't track where I am.

actually all you have to do is open VZnav, then switch apps and open your other GPS. as long as both are running you will be fine.

Do you have a BB data plan. You need that for both BBMaps and GoogleMaps to work properly.

Yes I have a data plan.when I had my Q gmaps had a track location option but that piecer of a phone didn't have gps. Now that I have a gps phone gmaps has no track location option. If I open gmaps and go to gps settings in the bb and refresh gps gmaps will pinpoint my location but I still can't track like in bbmaps. Which brings me to another point I upgraded to 4.5 and bbmaps is installed and its even in my service book but there is still no icon for it.

I am running GoogleMaps 2.2 on my 8800 and it tracks. Don't have to do anything to get it to track either. I hit "My location" and it finds me and once the satellites lock on, it tracks as I move accurately. Will somewhat track, but slowly, using just the cell tower fix.

Well I just downloaded live search. I don't know if it has voice directions but it will acquire a real gps fix. Even if there are no voice directions but it will track as I drive and the directions change according to where I am it will be better than gmaps and bbmaps since neither does that.

Google Maps tracks just fine on the 8310. Are you running OS 4.5 or something?

You'll see "My Location" whether it's using GPS or triangulating. It's just that with triangulation the margin of error is much larger (I've seen up to 2300m) and you'll see it as a shaded blue circle on the map. If it's using GPS it should be within about 3 meters and you won't see a shaded blue circle around your blue dot.

Google Maps will use whatever is available to it. I mean, if you're indoors it will triangulate. It should switch to using GPS once you step outside though.

A320Mech -- here's what you need to get Google Maps working properly. 4.5 is the reason why you've been having problems with it (that's the joy of playing with beta software).
